I love sitting down with a new cookbook, a stack of post-it markers, a pencil, a notepad and a cup of tea, and an hour to browse, dream and take notes.

While there are tons of free sites (including Helpful Pantry) that can give you information, it doesn’t always benefit those of us who just love books, or don’t have access to internet bandwidth, or don’t want to trust the network for our information.

A good dehydrating reference book is a must, and I’m sharing some of the best dehydrating recipe books to help you with your favorite hobby.

Before we begin, these books are specific to dehydration and do not cover those books that may include dehydration as a part of the general umbrella of food preservation.

What to Look for in a Good Dehydrating Book

  • secure information: above all, secure information is necessary. As with canning, you need to follow the standards of the National Center for Home Food Preservation. always compare a book to the knowledge you’ve gained here and at nchfp for safety first.
  • helpful tips: tips are very important as they give depth to the process being done Dehydrating Simply telling how to dehydrate citrus to the standard 135°F is good information, but even better information is explaining about sugars and browning and how lowering the temperature can help alleviate that. look for helpful tips along the way.
  • a-z index: Make sure the book covers enough foods that you would normally have available to make it worth buying.</li
  • recipes – if you are a beginner, the recipes to learn how to integrate dehydrated products are good. if you’re experienced, look for those that have mostly recipes!
  • good addendum: Finding what you need is easier with a good addendum

For a “meals in a jar” type of book, the recipes are good, but many require a lot of refrigerated items to cook. you can always add to the dry mix using freeze-dried items to replace eggs, milk, cream, etc. used in recipes
