Amazon Best Books of the Month, January 2013: I consider myself a cautious reader, the literary equivalent of a sear salmon, wary of fakes, wary of sloppy plots and clichés, and Willing to bail out if I’m not drawn to page 50. So when Meltzer hooked me at the end of page three, and never stopped hooking me, I have to say I was impressed. I was also impressed that the hero of the fifth killer (first introduced in the inner circle) is not a misanthropic cop or an alcoholic pi, but a clever archivist at the national archives. Beecher White is a glorified librarian, for crying out loud. But with a dash of Sherlock Holmes and a hint of Indiana Jones, White is a refreshingly quirky pursuit of justice, and his search for a would-be killer takes us through history and through the secret spaces around Washington. dc, makes for an exciting read, as well as a good reminder that a page turner can be smart, deeply researched, and just plain fun. -neal thompson
