the main character is hal mikkelson, half araluen/half skandian, member of the band of brothers and captain of the heron ship. With his crew, Hal must prove himself and fight for the Skandia.

the band of brothers narrates the books in order:

  1. the outcasts – are outcasts. hal, stig and the others: they are the boys that the others do not want to know anything about. Skandians, as any Ranger’s Apprentice reader could tell, are known for their size and strength. not these guys. however, that doesn’t mean they don’t have skills. the icy waters make for a treacherous playing field…especially when not everyone thinks it’s a game.
  2. the invaders – hal and the herons have done the impossible. This group of strangers has defeated the strongest and most skilled young warriors in all of Skandia to win the Brother Band Competition. But their celebration comes to an abrupt end when the Skandians’ holiest artifact, the Andomal, is stolen, and the herons are to blame.
  3. the hunters – hal and his Band of Brothers The crew is on the trail of the pirate Zavac with only one thing on their minds: stop the bloodthirsty thief before he can do any more damage. Of course, they also know that Zavac has the Andomal, the priceless Skandian artifact stolen when the band of brothers let their guard down.

  1. The Relief Slaves: Hal and his fellow Herons have returned home to Skandia after defeating the pirate captain Zavac and retrieving Skandia’s most precious artifact, the Andomal. With their honor restored, the herons embark on a new mission: to track down a former rival turned bitter enemy.
  2. Scorpion Mountain: Hal, the crew of his band of Brothers and the Gilan ranger have freed the twelve Araluens sold as slaves. Returning to Araluen, Gilan receives a new mission from King Duncan: to protect the life of his daughter. Princess Cassandra has already survived an attempt on her life, and now rumors of a second attempt have reached the kingdom. a deadly sect known as the scorpion cult is believed to be behind the assassination threat.

The Ghost Faces – When the crew of the gang of brothers gets caught up in A massive storm at sea Son veers off course and washes up on the shores of a land so far west that Hal can’t recognize it on any of his maps. eerily, the locals are nowhere to be seen, but the herons get the feeling that they are being watched.

  1. The Cauldron: In Hallasholm, Stig participates in the annual Maktig competition to determine the greatest warrior in Skandia. But a late-night knock on the door brings someone Stig never expected to see again, along with a request the herons are hard-pressed to refuse: a rescue mission of epic proportions.

  3. The Stern Chase: During a short jaunt, the herons meet With an Iberian pirate ship he assaults the Sonderland coast, so Hal and his crew take action. Although they quickly succeed, the Iberians express their fury against the herons, vowing revenge. and soon they are, storming the harbor and stealing or destroying as many ships as they can. although there is little evidence that the Iberians are behind, the herons seize their ship, the only one to have survived the raid, and run after their enemy in hot pursuit. they will take down these pirates and get justice no matter what.
