eavesdropping played an important role in candice fox’s development as a storyteller. The daughter of an enthusiastic foster carer, she spent her childhood listening on street corners to stories of violence, madness and evil from the police and childcare authorities who frequented her home in Bankstown, Sydney’s West Side. p>
“We had our first family computer when I was twelve years old,” he says in this interview. ‘That would have been when I started experimenting [with writing]. I had always been an intense dreamer, not particularly because I was capricious, but I was easily distracted and detached. my home life was very chaotic and I was very anxious at school so I made up little stories to escape. I thought it was great to write for this, because I could really focus on my fantasy world, leave the real world completely for long periods of time.’
After a brief stint in the Australian Navy, during his twenties, Fox devoted himself to academia and taught high school through two undergraduate and two postgraduate degrees. during this time she also continued to write. After ten years of honing her craft, which included a period mentored by James Forsyth, she found success with her first novel, Hades (2014), winner of the Australian Crime Writers Association Ned Kelly Award. . The following year, Hades’ sequel Eden won the Ned Kelly Award for best crime novel, making Fox only the second author to win these accolades in a row. Several of his later novels (Fall, Crimson Lake, Redemption Point, and Past Midnight) have also been shortlisted for the award.
In 2015, Fox began collaborating with James Patterson, the international powerhouse in crime writing. Their first novel together, Never Never, set in the Australian outback, went straight to number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list in the US and also topped the UK charts. His subsequent novels Fifty Fifty, Liar Liar, and Hush Hush have been international bestsellers.
