If there’s one thing I love, it’s exposing my children to the classics. and I’m talking good classics here, I have a pretty high standard of what makes a good book. (you’ll never see junie b. jones popping up on one of my lists, can we say much about attitude?). I thought I’d divide these classic novel lists into grade levels, so today let’s start with classic kindergarten novels!
please note: most of these books would be great even for the very young and if you have older children and haven’t read them, definitely do, they are great for all ages!

We read quite a few books while my daughter was in kindergarten and these were some of our favorites. if you have some, you would add them to the list. I’d love to hear them!

mr. popper penguins
A classic of American humor, the adventures of a house painter and his hatchling of climbing penguins have delighted children for generations.
my father’s dragon
a story about a boy who runs away to an island to rescue a dragon and finds many obstacles in his way.
The narrative mode is unusual, as the narrator refers to the protagonist only as “my father”, giving the impression that this is a true story that happened a long time ago.
the hundred dresses
At the center of the story is Wanda Petronski, a Polish schoolgirl in Connecticut who is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. Ella Wanda claims that she has a hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn’t and harasses her mercilessly. The class feels terrible when Wanda is kicked out of school, but by then it’s too late to apologize. Maddie, one of Wanda’s classmates, finally decides that she “will never stand by without saying anything again.”

All the original stories are here, as Raggedy Ann arrives at Marcella’s nursery and quickly becomes the leader of the dolls. After learning a lesson from a naughty foray into the pantry, Raggedy Ann’s adventures show her striving to be good and succeed. She and the other dolls rescue Fido, the family dog, from the dogcatcher. When, on an adventure, Raggedy Ann has to replace her stuffing, she gets her famous “I love you” candy heart from her. Raggedy Ann also rides a kite, teaches two new dolls to be tolerant, and shares the excitement of having a little brother for Marcella, among many other stories.

The Aldens begin their adventure by building a home in a boxcar. Their goal is to stay together, and in the process, they find a grandfather.
