The book begins off the coast of Alaska’s Tariuk Island as Cole McKenna leaves the chaos above for the chaos below. At forty feet, he pulls his external light from his utility belt and turns it on. he sees the remains of the cessna and radios the surface to inform them that he is going offline. the surface informs him that the third diver is in the water. Cole is the dive captain and is responsible for each member of the rescue team. Kayden, the third diver, is his sister, and Cole is careful not to let that affect his decisions. Cole thinks back to the plane. the fuselage glow was no longer visible. however, he was hopeful that there was still enough air trapped in the ship to keep the victims alive. he is soon inspecting the plane. Cole prays that Henry got loose before the plane plummeted against the ridge. soon, the other members of the dive team join him and pull the victims out of the airship. however, time is short and they must hurry to reach the surface and the hospital. they find three people on the plane. two of them, a man and a woman, are unconscious. the third, agnes gray, is still conscious in the back of the plane, in an air bag. she quickly raises them to the surface. However, a fourth passenger and Henry, the plane’s pilot, are missing.

The book opens as Piper straightens up with sweat dampening her pajamas despite the December chill. the clock reads 1:30 a.m. you can hear creaking sounds echoing along the floorboards below. the steps are heavy and not like those of him kayden’s sister. aurora, her dog, is agitated and lunges for the door. Piper stands up and opens the door slightly to peer into the darkness. Aurora slides, as Piper tries to block her, and charges down the hall. At that moment Kayden appears in the hallway with a rifle in his hand, and shoots Aurora short. the three walk down the hall. they can hear a male growl below and something hits the ground. Kayden points the rifle at the noise and orders the person to get closer to the lights. Piper turns on the light. she is horrified when she meets the sight of her brother reefing her, covered in blood.
