wallace earle stegner is a published american novelist. he was also a short story writer, an American historian, and a passionate environmentalist.
stegner was born on february 18, 1909. he was born in lake mills in the state of iowa but grew up in different places, from montana to utah and eastend in saskatchewan. He had the honor of being nominated for and winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1972. Five years later, in 1977, the author would also be the recipient of a United States National Book Award.

bo can be the head of the family, but he can also be ruthless and violent. he’s always looking for the next big thing, determined to seek out a fortune and eventually strike it big. This could be with farmland, working in hotels, or even illegally smuggling rum down the back roads of the northwestern United States. he just jumps from one thing to another and none of them seem to work.
This is the story of a family, cleverly told over several decades of its existence. This masterfully told story will have you turning the page to find out what happens as Stegner takes the reader through 30 years of this family and what they go through and how their choices end up affecting them.

the character of bruce mason starts this novel. Bruce is on his way to her aunt’s funeral in Salt Lake City. that would be the external reason given, but the real reason is that she has a strange feeling and is being pulled back to this place.
45 years have passed since he returned to the city. she once lived there, but she ran away and had to get out of there. memories of her are bittersweet with a touch more bitter. Bruce has done quite well as he is now a diplomat and a statesman and is quite successful at what he does.
Even though he’s grown up, he knows his childhood was lonely and awkward. he hasn’t gotten over it totally still, even after all this time. it was hard for him growing up, and adolescence was just as hard. he is now someone who has earned respect in his field internationally. the contrast between the present and the past could not be more striking.
maybe bruce needed to go back to where he came from to see it all one more time. As the faded reality of the past collides with the reality of the present, could the ghosts and echoes of what is technically gone threaten to overtake him?
Bruce is doing what he can to organize his aunt’s funeral. while she does so, the reader embarks on a totally unique personal and painful journey of interiority.
From dark childhood moments with his father to his supportive mother, a friend who would take him to a respectable world he wanted to belong to, and a woman he almost married, so much is happening in this story. that you will have to read it yourself to fully absorb all that stegner has written!
