99 names of god(2021) by br. david steindl-rast

“for most people, this interfaith dialogue will be something they only read about, because they don’t have the opportunity to participate in it. …if you are interested in promoting interfaith dialogue, which I think we should be interested in…then we should expose ourselves. exposure is the key word. all people who have been exposed to other traditions, really exposed and not just talked about and not just fearful of them, “know” someone who is of a different religion. so make a special effort to “meet” other people of other religions”, writes fr. David Steindl-Rast on 99 Names of God, which offers a meditation on each of the 99 names of God found in the Islamic creed. this devotional volume is addressed to people of any religious belief who through the many names of god enter the door of the one nameless god who unites us.

book cover of i am through you so i david steindl-rast

I’m through you so I (2017) by br. david steindl-rast, osb brother david tells the incomparably rich story of his life. Beginning with his childhood in Vienna, he describes his time during World War II and his years as a student after the war, his family’s emigration to the United States, and his entry into the then newly founded Benedictine monastery, Monte Salvador, in the New York State there, he soon began to search for what were then still untrodden spiritual paths with undiscovered entrances to non-Christian religions.

from then on, contemplation and periods of public life alternated with brother david. mysticism is his mission but not a mysticism devoid of connection with the world. his is a mystique of everyday life, of immediate life in the now, of full experience. he is convinced that the spirit of god speaks in and for all of us.

The Way of Silence book

the path of silence: engaging the sacred in daily life (2016) by br. david steindl-rast, osb of the path of silence: “the tranquility of order is a dynamic tranquility, the stillness of a flame that burns in perfect calm, of a wheel that turns so fast that it seems to stop. silence in this sense is not only a quality of the environment, but above all an attitude, an attitude of listening… let us give each other this gift of silence, so that we can listen together and listen to each other. only in this silence can we hear that soft breath of peace, that music with which the spheres dance, that universal harmony with which we also hope to dance.”

Ground we share - book cover

The Ground We Share: Everyday Practice, Buddhist and Christian (1996) by Robert Aitken, Br. david steindl-rast, osb, edited by nelson foster this is a charming, interesting, and insightful conversation between two major contemporary spiritual teachers and practitioners, one (aitken) an american-born zen master and the other (steindl-rast) a monk Benedictine. The conversation is drawn from a week-long retreat that Aitken and Steindl-Rast shared in Hawaii in 1991. They quickly agree to focus on “everyday practice” rather than the abstract conceptions of Buddhism and Christianity. the result is not so much a formal contribution to the growing body of Buddhist-Christian dialogue as an illuminating and multifaceted exploration of a common ground: the sacred heart that beats at the center of a world shared by Christians and Buddhists. This volume offers a rare opportunity to eavesdrop on a conversation between compassionate believers who are comfortable with their differences, fully committed to one another, and fully committed to the world. steve schroeder (list of books)

gratitude, heart of prayer: an approach to life in fullness (1984) by fr. david steindl-rast, osb, foreword by henri nouwen i am glad that, after nearly two decades, this book is still finding a steady stream of new readers. From time to time I hear from people who have made thanks their daily reading in times of crisis, sickness, or on their deathbed. this fills me with wonder. so does the fact that groups that read and discuss books together have found this one useful. what do I like about him? which deals with the main aspects of gratitude in a systematic way, without -I hope- being dry. and I especially like the list of keywords ordered from a to z (yes, I even have one for “x”). in fact, the glossary we plan to include on this site will continue and expand on that idea. – brother David
