a rather refreshing change of pace from the adrenaline-pumping thriller; an accidental death is a brilliantly crafted mystery that is full of well-developed characters. The pacing is much slower, giving Peter Granger time to focus on the characters and setting. In this installment, author Peter Grainger introduces readers to DC Smith and his protégé, DC Walters. Unlike most detective narratives and their protagonists, An Accidental Death focuses on creating believable characters and situations rather than foul language, lurid murders, and sexual overtones. Smith, who happens to be a former detective chief investigator, requests a demotion and thus becomes a detective sergeant after department politics and a failed investigation. To solve crimes and mysteries, Smith uses his detective skills and intuition to guide an up-and-coming Walter and solve a suspicious death. In this installment, Smith is wonderfully paired with the new police intern, giving readers broad and thoughtful views of his past and present life.

The writing is not only fast, but also precise, with a welcoming dose of humor. Smith gets a case thought to be simple; the tragic drowning of a student. Smith was given the case to fix, but eventually discovered that there was much more to investigate, leading him to disagree with various interest groups. That said, an accidental death packs a pretty convoluted plot that shows the importance of having thoughtful investigators.

In this second installment, DC Smith finds himself assigned to the murder case of an extremely generous woman who lived in a retirement home. The woman is one of the members of a group of five people who own a company. once the death was found to be unnatural, an investigation had to be done on the spot. once again, smith works with waters under the supervision of reeves. The deputy superintendent pressures the two to accept the new assignment, which is miles away from their King Lakes division. while working on the case, smith is pressured by his old colleague, who is in charge of managing a law firm and also in the process introduces him to his very attractive accountant. Detective Smith manages to get several dates with the accountant. however, because his wife passed away about three years ago, smith is a bit reluctant to take things to another level with the accountant. However, in the process, we learn about Smith’s past, as he talks to the accountant, he listens to music and plays his guitar.

the theme in the novel but for grace is death and the author; Peter Grainger has handled this issue well. the second issue is the legality of assisted suicide. Smith, the protagonist, continues to prove himself with his subtle wit and clever police work of his own, and in the process, provides the rather appreciative reader with food for thought. one of the people being investigated suggested that smith, the protagonist read the dead, a story by james joyce. With that said, author Peter Grainger has come up with an extremely complicated plot with well-written characters. the plot and stories are strong too. dc smith is a deeply complex and wonderfully created character. If you’re a fan of Peter Robinson’s DCI Banks, then you’re going to fall in love with this installment.

luck and judgment is another highly entertaining entry in dc smith’s series of investigative books. Like the previous installment, Fate and Judgment follows the same pattern as the first two books in the series. Smith takes on a seemingly accidental death and ends up finding much more in the process. As was the case with the first two installments, the reader ends up finding out much more about the protagonist DC Smith, his role in Northern Ireland Military Intelligence, his role in bringing a serial killer to face justice, and his retirement from a much higher position. Using luck and good judgment, DC Smith investigates a missing person case, right next to an offshore drilling facility that was located in the North Sea. As things stand, death appears to be a simple misadventure case of slipping off a drilling rig, however, as DC Smith continues to dig, the case continues to get more and more complicated. It is believed that a certain James Bell had just committed suicide, but after further investigation it is established that he was pushed.

lucky of judgment is not only packed with lots of action, but also packed with police procedurals and well-drawn characters. The author, Peter Grainger has a gift for measured, restrained and realistic mysteries. For the first three installments, Grainger has built up the core of the characters with ingenuity and subtlety, eventually placing them in fairly plausible scenarios and having them investigate human crimes. In addition to examining his place on the force, Smith also examines his age and what his age meant for his career. That said, Luck and Judgment is a meticulous and riveting police procedural, beginning with protagonist DC Smith uncovering a more sinister explanation for Bell’s disappearance.
