While amazon has mastered unifying its user experience, its kindle readers come in a variety large enough to justify differences in navigation.
As a result, there may be a slight difference in the process of deregistering a kindle from device to device.
For your convenience, I’ve covered the steps from the beginning for each device so you don’t have to read a section that isn’t relevant to your kindle.

1. how to unregister a kindle using your computer?
To unregister your kindle using your computer, sign in to your amazon account. open the “manage content & devices section” window, then click the “device” tab. select the kindle device you want to unregister and click the device’s “unregister” option.
here is a step by step explanation of the above process.
step 1: open the content & device configuration
The first step is to sign in to your kindle account. open the amazon website, log in to your account.
Once that’s done, hover over your account name (don’t click on it). in the dropdown menu, click “content & devices”.

step 2: open the devices section
By default, the window will open to the “content library” page. make sure you click on the “devices” section to open the device preferences.
then click the “kindle” option under the “amazon devices” section. this represents your kindle device instead of the kindle app that is registered on your mobile phone.
click the name of your kindle device.
Step 3: Unregister the device
On the next page, simply click the “unregister” option in the “device summary” section to unregister your device.
It’s that easy!
Step 4: Unregister other devices using your computer
You can also unregister other devices, such as your apple and android phones, ipad and other tablets, using your computer.
Just open the devices tab once again, click on the “kindle” option in the “apps installed on devices” section. then click the “cancel” option next to the device you want to unregister from your account.
2. how to unregister kindle paperwhite?
To unregister a kindle paperwhite, open the settings by dragging down the notification panel from the top of the screen. then click on “your account”. if your device is already registered, you will be prompted to “deregister” the device. tap “unregister” to remove your device from your account.

step 1: open the notifications section
The first step is to open the notification panel. To do this, drag the down arrow from the top of the screen to the bottom.
For some devices, you may need to click the “more settings” menu represented by the three vertical dots next to the cart (as shown in the image above).
step 2: tap on the “settings” option
From the menu that appears, click the “settings” option.
step 3: click on “my account”
You will now see the “settings” screen. the first option will display the name of the person the device is registered to. If you don’t see the name, your device may not be associated with a Kindle account yet.

Step 4: Unregister the device
When you click on “your account”, a pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm whether you want to unregister the device. click the “cancel” option.
that’s it! Your kindle paperwhite will now be unregistered!
3. how to unregister kindle fire device?
To unregister your kindle fire device, you need to open the “my account” section in the device’s settings or native web browser. for the latter, you will need to go to amazon.com, while the former will be available in the quick actions menu. the “unsubscribe” option will be in the “my account” section.
If you browse using the native web browser, you’ll need to make sure you’re signed in to the same account your kindle fire is registered to. This is usually the case as the Kindle Fire operating system allows cross-login between the web browser and the Kindle system.
You can also use a web browser on a computer and follow the steps outlined in the first method.
only in cases where you have deliberately logged in to a different account in the web browser, you will not be able to unsubscribe from the device’s internet browser. in that case, you are limited to using the settings page to unlink your account.
4. how to unregister kindle app in android?
The kindle app is registered to your amazon account. If you want to remove the app’s access to your kindle account without uninstalling the app from your android e-reader or mobile phone, you just need to make sure you are not logged in to the account.
To unregister the kindle app on android, sign out of your kindle account by opening the app and clicking the “more” option at the bottom of the screen. then click “log out”. confirm the intent upon receiving the confirmation message and your app will be unlinked from your account.

how to unregister kindle on iphone/ipad?
To unregister kindle on your iphone or ipad, you need to open the kindle app and click the dropdown icon that shows “more” options, and choose to sign out. When you click “sign out”, you will be asked to confirm that you want to sign out of your amazon account.
Confirming will unregister your apple device from kindle. this will not affect your kindle account library, but it will not allow you to access the books in your kindle cloud.
This is ideal if you’re borrowing your family iPad to access your Kindle account but don’t want to share access with other iPad users.
what happens when you deregister a kindle device?
Whether you’re planning to sell a used Kindle or just want to give it to a friend, sibling, or spouse, you’ll need to deregister your Kindle device.
but since amazon prompts you for confirmation and sometimes requires you to enter a password to unlink your account from your device, you might want to know if unregistering has any consequences.
the following things happen when you unregister a kindle device
- the device can no longer access the kindle cloud; Even for free books that are available to all Kindle users, the device must be signed in to an Amazon account, even if it isn’t. t the one you just unlinked. a decommissioned device cannot access the kindle cloud.
- kindle is locked from account specific library: your kindle account has your library in the cloud and stores all the books you have purchased from amazon. when you unregister the account, the kindle cannot access those books.
- Online progress tracking is paused: Kindle devices have offline progress tracking that helps open the book offline where you last left off. A similar tracker is active on your Kindle Cloud Reader, tracking how far you’ve read a book online. the latter cannot track anything once you deregister your kindle.
- kindle unlimited and prime reading are disabled: If your kindle account qualifies for ku access or amazon prime reading, then benefits depend on the account being linked to your device. at the time you unregister your kindle, the benefits of the account are not available on the device.
- Your kindle library is safe: Even if you unlink the account and make your kindle cloud inaccessible to the device, the books you’ve purchased are safe. You can access your books and last saved online progress from any device you link to your Amazon account.
- Your offline data is safe: Just as books in your cloud don’t disappear when you unsubscribe, books on your device, especially outside of the Kindle Cloud ecosystem, they remain safe. the two are simply unrelated.
can you re-register a decommissioned kindle device?
Hearing that your offline data remains safe, though divorced from the cloud, and your cloud data remains unchanged but is not linked to your device, you may want to know if the link can be restored.
You can re-register a deregistered kindle device to a new account or the same account by simply logging in to the kindle account from settings. the cloud library of the specific account will be instantly available upon re-registration.

These are the exact steps to take when changing ownership of your kindle device, especially when giving it to a stranger:
- unregister kindle account: This is the first step to make transferring ownership of kindle liability free. Unregistering removes the device’s access to your amazon/kindle account.

You can unregister a kindle book from your device by clicking “remove download”. this will free up your device’s hard drive while retaining the book in your kindle account, from where you can re-download it whenever you like.

cannot unregister kindle – troubleshooting guide!
- Try unsubscribing from the device. If you can’t unsubscribe from the device, please click settings and find “my account”. If the unregister option does not work, there may be problems with your device’s internet access.
- unsubscribe from amazon.com: Sign in to your kindle/amazon account on your computer, then click the dropdown menu on the top right that gives you access to “my account page” . click “manage devices and content” or equivalent and navigate to your kindle. click more/ellipses/dropdown and choose “remove device”. confirm the intention to deregister the device.
