Dorothy Garlock is the best-selling author of more than 50 historical romance novels, most of them set in the American West. She has also written under pseudonyms, including Dorothy Glenn, Dorothy Philips, and Johanna Phillips. she was born in texas, in 1942, but the city of oklahoma is the place where she spent twenty-five years. In 1955, she and her husband moved to Iowa, and she had a career as a columnist and bookkeeper for a local newspaper, retiring at age 49. Before deciding to publish anything, she had written four manuscripts and now has more than 20 million books in circulation.

Dorothy Garlock has written many series, but she is perhaps best known for writing the “Jazz Age” series. The first novel in this series is titled “The City Limit” and tells the story of Julie Jones, an outspoken girl who works on her father’s humble farm. America’s roaring Jazz Age catches her off guard, dragging a war veteran named Evan Johnson and a young man named Birdie Stuart to her town in Missouri.

A World War I veteran named Evan Johnson has now returned to a small community to ensure that his drunken father does not ruin his farm, which was given to him as an inheritance by his dying mother. This is the story of Evan and Julie discovering how they can be a part of each other’s lives. they both have secrets and fear that the skeletons in the closet will ruin whatever spark of romance is brewing between them. the funny thing is that julie has 6 other siblings, and all of their names start with j. and the father’s name is Jethro.

When julie’s mother died, she had to drop out of school to take care of everyone in the family and generally run the household. this is a job that she likes to do and she is happy with her position in her life. what is unfortunate is that there is a series of violations in the community and a new police station is installed in order to clean up the town. The town drunk turns out to be Evan’s father, so the residents are wary of him as they believe like father is like son.

The second book in the Jazz Age series is titled “On Top of a Hill” and tells the story of Annabel Lee Donovan, who may be the daughter of a bootlegger, but she’s also a lady. she’s a skinny brunette who’s desperate for her father to quit his smuggling business and then settle down. Instead, when the family moves in for the night with the help of henchmen Spinner and Boone, they discover that the new place was somehow different. the events that will soon take place there will change the fate of her young life.

Gin in the bathtub and speakeasies was the kind of scene you’d expect from the Jazz Age, but in 1925, the sale of whiskey turned into a deadly turf war between criminals from Chicago to St. luis the whole country felt the change, and the beats of the music came with the warning that the good times will soon cease to be. However, something wonderful seems to be happening for Annabel, and she meets a handsome man named Corbin Appleby. This former sheriff in Fertile, Missouri seemed too good to be true, and Annabel feared he was working undercover to arrest his father. Despite these fears, he falls in love with the man, and it is the first time he has felt this way.

The setting of the story is 1920’s America makes for a fascinating story. the bad guy is hard to guess, and you’re always surprised every time. This is a story of smuggling and murder, and there are plenty of rednecks to find. this is a thriller of mystery coupled with romance and will keep you turning the pages. What’s great about the novel is the phenomenal way the author describes 1920s America, and as a reader, you can see yourself living in this time period.

New characters are introduced in this story, and there are some returning characters from the first book. The lawman in book one, corbin and jack jones return, and some characters are mentioned, but they don’t play a very active role in the story. Spinner and Boone are Annabel’s father’s helpers, planning to do one last smuggling job before finally leaving him. Unfortunately, things don’t go as expected and not everyone is so happy. There’s also a local boy who has set his sights on Annabel, and he keeps checking her out.

At first, you might feel like this story doesn’t have much to offer in terms of plot. but as you read on you will find a story that is well written and the characters have also been well developed. as a reader, you may find yourself relating to the main characters, and they are quite interesting. The supporting characters are also worth mentioning, including someone named rainwater. the setting of the story is also very good, and it is during the prohibition times where a young woman finds herself caught in the middle of a family business and the people who try to kidnap it. All in all, On Top of a Hill is a great Dorothy Garlock novel, and if these two books are any guide, you can expect more good things from this author.
