Commonly known by her three names, Dorothy Edith Gilman, Gilman is a renowned American writer whose prowess began at a young and tender age. Dorothy Gilman was born on June 25, 1923, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Gilman is the daughter of Minister James Bruce and Essa Gilman. Gilman’s early days experience saw her enter writing, beginning her writing journey at just nine years old. At the age of 11, Ella Dorothy Gilman won a hotly contested storytelling tournament in which she competed against boys ages 10 to 16. Ella Dorothy Gilman attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1940 and 1945, where she learned and planned to write picture books for children.
In 1945, Dorothy Gilman married Edgar Butters and was blessed with two sons, Jonathan and Christopher. Unfortunately, the couple divorced after 20 years of marriage. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania (1963-1965). Before becoming an author, Gilman sought employment as a teacher and telephone operator. Under the name Dorothy Gilman Butter, he successfully wrote children’s stories for more than ten novels. his breakthrough came after he started thinking about adult novels. his famous article, mrs. pollifax, reflected the life of a retired grandmother, later becoming a cia agent. Dorothy Gilman reflected her life experiences and challenges in her writing.

Dorothy Gilman was honored as an Annual Grandmaster by the Mystery Writers of America in 2010. Ella Gilman met her sudden death in 2012, at age 88 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

the unexpected mrs. Pollifax is the first installment in this remarkable series written by Dorothy Gilman. Within this delightful novel, the author introduces the reader to Mrs. emily pollifax, which is in her golden old years. her being of this age, ma’am. pollifax sought to find meaning in her life. she goes to a regular medical appointment and the doctor notices that she is somewhat depressed. she asked if she was alright, ma’am. pollifax gives the doctor a brief description of her life. the doctor concludes that she needs something that can spark some excitement in her life. after the session, the doctor encourages her to find something interesting to participate in. however, mrs. Pollifax did not mention to the doctor that she had, at one point, been on the verge of committing suicide by throwing herself off the edge of a roof.
The doctors’ advice took center stage in his mind. Along with the memories of her, she made the decision to do something exciting in her life. this was when mrs. Pollifax decided to travel to Virginia to visit the CIA headquarters. when she arrives, she asks to see mr. mason. at the same time mr. Mason hopes to fill an open position for an agent required for a courier mission. Mr. carstairs, the head of the department, assumes that mrs. pollifax is that woman. Mrs. Pollifax is hired as a spy despite her lack of training and experience. her first assignment is a delightful three-week trip to mexico city. she is assigned to go sightseeing in the city as a tourist and then pick up a package containing a microfilm for another agent.
upon arriving in mexico, mrs. pollifax locates the bookstore where it is supposed to pick up the package. Mrs. pollifax enters and meets the owner, who hands him the solitaire book and a simple deck of cards. all the while, she wonders where the movie was that she had been sent. It’s not until her return to the states that she realized that particular movie is in the deck of cards. when she arrived on the day of her appointment, she returned to the store but discovered that the owner was not there. another man who claimed to be the owner of the store and asked her to drop her keywords.

Interestingly, the man drugged her after she blurted out her code words. She wakes up tied up with another spy, Johnny Farrell on a plane. Mrs. pollifax is drugged once more and wakes up on another plane. Upon recovering, he discovers that they had been taken hostage in Albania and held in a remote compound, the bastion of Communism in Europe. Being social in nature, she freely interacts with other people, including her captors. She sees the best in everyone she meets due to her natural tendency to make friends not forgetting how smart, witty and charming she is.
Farrell, being an avid spy, attempts suicide in an attempt to hide his secrets from his captors, but ends up wounded. Mrs. pollifax insists on getting him medical attention amid suffering a serious broken leg. Her interaction earns him the respect and trust of a Russian spy who agrees to help and make escape plans for her and Farrell. Also inside the compound, there is a Chinese prisoner who turns out to be a kidnapped scientist. he also agreed to help the lady. pollifax on her escape mission and her quest for freedom. the escape breakout was not so easy. They faced many dangers and faced many serious challenges, but they never gave up on this exciting adventure. they finally managed to get out and were picked up by the ship from the sea. Mrs. pollifax returned home to her friends wiser about her recent affair.
That said, mrs. pollifax, among other books in mrs. Dorothy Gilman series, is a wonderful read for reluctant readers. reading the article is exciting, fun and fast. dorothy gillman has once again done an excellent job of creating well developed and realistic characters that will grab your attention. recently, there have been a couple of movies based on this book, the unexpected mrs. polyfax. Gilman’s books make great vacation books and are perfect to accompany long trips due to their light, engaging, and brief nature.
