you may have already heard that dr. Seuss Enterprises LP, which manages the beloved author’s publishing interests, has decided to stop printing six of the author’s books. In a statement issued on March 2, dr. seuss birthday, organization said:
“We are committed to action. to that end, dr. seuss enterprises, in collaboration with a panel of experts, including educators, reviewed our catalog of titles and made the decision last year to discontinue publishing and licensing of the following titles: and to think i saw it on mulberry street, if i ran the zoo, mcelligot’s pool, beyond the zebra! super scrambled eggs! and the cat contest. these books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.

“ceasing the sale of these books is just one part of our commitment and broader plan to ensure that dr. The Seuss Enterprises catalog represents and supports all communities and families.”
Unsurprisingly, conservative commentators are in an uproar over what they see as an egregious cancel-culture incident. to be fair, it’s a bad example of cancel culture. as far as i can tell absolutely no one is calling dr. Seuss books can be pulled off library shelves, and used copies of problem books are easy to find (see below). Publishers decide to remove books from publication all the time for a variety of reasons, including their compatibility with the tastes and sensibilities of modern audiences. all six books in question contain absolutely offensive depictions of blacks and asians, and it’s perfectly reasonable not to sell children’s books that contain racist images.
However, eBay has decided that adults should also be protected from these books. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, an eBay spokesperson said the company was actively delisting these books because they contained “offensive images.” eBay’s offensive materials policy states that sellers may not post items “that promote or glorify hate, violence, or discrimination are not allowed.”
Of course, countless works of art by authors, directors, and artists of past generations include language or images that are offensive to modern audiences. There are also historically important texts like Adolph Hitler’s Mein Kampf (which is still available in eBay’s “Antique Books & Collectibles” section). then there are texts like to kill a mockingbird or the adventures of huckleberry finn. the former contains explicit depictions of racism, although these behaviors are not “glorified” in the book. The American Library Association has cited The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as one of the books most frequently “challenged” for its depiction of racist language.
we contacted ebay and asked how the company will make these types of decisions in the future and who is responsible for those decisions in the company, but have not yet received a response. We’ll update this post if we get a response.

all the attention has had an effect barbara streisand on dr. The Seuss Bibliography, which rose to the top of Amazon’s best-seller list this week. overnight, the Seussian back catalog has become a hot cultural topic. conservative commentators are always eager to find an excuse to criticize liberals for what they see as cancel culture. Instead of discussing, say, President Biden’s popular coronavirus relief bill, it’s easier to run another segment on cancel culture. however, conservatives and critics of cancel culture are not the only ones interested in preserving these books.
dr. seuss is one of the country’s most beloved children’s authors, and the first edition signed by dr. Seuss books are valuable among book collectors. Additionally, some collectors are known as completists, meaning they seek out every published work by their favorite authors. and i saw it on mulberry street was actually the first children’s book published by dr. seuss, which means it has intrinsic value for collectors.

the forbidden dr. Seuss’s books are still available for sale on sites like Amazon and Abebooks, both of which allow third-party sellers to list used and collectible books for sale. Due to the sudden interest in these titles, scalpers are raising prices. collectors will have to pay at least $500 to buy to think i saw it on mulberry street and if i ran the zoo. We could only find a handful of hardcover copies of these books for sale, but they are available.
You can find some of the listings below, though the remaining copies of these books are getting harder to find as collectors snap them up. some copies of these books are already selling for thousands of dollars.
