You can read Kindle format eBooks on your Amazon Kindle or on the free Kindle app for smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. You’ll need: a library card and pin, an amazon kindle or a kindle app on another type of device, an amazon account, wifi, a browser where you can check e-books.

  1. search for a title, author, topic, or keyword, or you can search for titles by topic at nypl.overdrive.com
  2. when searching for titles, a blue “available” banner will appear on the An item’s cover indicates that it is available for loan. If you see a white “waiting list” sign, it means the item is not currently available for loan, but you can reserve it.
  3. Click on loan under the title of the book you want.
  4. if the item is not available, you will see place a hold instead of borrowing. if you hold the title, you will receive an email notifying you when it is available for checkout.
  5. if you are not already logged into overdrive, you will be prompted to enter your library card number and pin and do click login. After you sign in, you’ll see the eBook you borrowed on your Enypl lending page.
  6. Click “read now with kindle”. amazon.com will open in a new tab.
  7. if you’re signed in to amazon on your computer, it will recognize it. make sure you are logged in with the correct account. If you’re signed in, choose where you’d like to receive this eBook. If you have already linked a kindle or kindle app, they will be listed here. click get the book from the library to complete the delivery.
  8. if you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to create one through i’m a new customer. You will then need to connect your kindle device or app to this account using the settings menu.
  9. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi (menu > settings > wireless settings > connect). if you don’t have wi-fi at home, visit one of our libraries or another wi-fi hotspot.
  10. if your download doesn’t appear once you connect to wi-fi, click the menu and “synchronize and search for items.”

no Wi-Fi

If you have an older kindle without wi-fi, or there is no wi-fi connection available outside of the library, there are a couple of extra steps to transfer the ebook file from your computer to the device.

  1. In the final step of the checkout process, you will have the option to download your ebook as a file.
  2. Connect your kindle to the computer via usb and save the file to the kindle documents folder.

In addition to Kindle eBooks, you can read EPUB eBooks and listen to MP3 audiobooks on the Kindle Fire by downloading the Overdrive app from the Amazon App Store. Follow the android instructions to set up the app and check out ebooks and audiobooks. You can also install the CloudLibrary app on your Kindle Fire, which gives you access to the Library’s additional collection of eBooks to borrow. This app is not available through the Amazon App Store. visit cloudlibrary for full instructions on how to install and configure the app.

  1. Go to amazon.com/myk and sign in.
  2. Click the actions button next to the title, then return this book.

borrow e-books through the nypl catalog

You can search and view overdrive and cloudlibrary ebooks through the catalog. When you search for ebooks, you’ll see a button to the right of the title indicating that you can check out the book in overdrive or cloudlibrary, or hold the title in overdrive or cloudlibrary. You can also check the status of all your digital payments and holds in My eBooks when you sign in to your account. do you still need help? Find an e-book class at your local library.
