The Domesday series is the one that author Edward Marston is well known for. Aside from mysteries, he also likes to write novels based on biography and children’s genres. edward was born in 1940 in wales, united kingdom and also grew up there. he completed his studies in modern history at oxford university and began working as a professor at the same college. He taught modern history to Oxford University students for a period of three years before becoming a full-time writer, mostly as a freelancer.

Under his original name Keith Miles, he has written a total of 6 novels based on the detective genre. These novels feature the main protagonist, Alan Saxon. Edward has set all the novels in different countries, each with different settings, the last of which was published in 2004.

Edward’s “Domesday” series of novels consists of 11 best-selling novels based on the historical mystery genre. The novels were published between 1993 and 2000 and introduced the central characters Gervase Bret Ralph Delchard, set during the 11th century. Ralph is a soldier and Bret is a lawyer by profession, who are appointed commissioners by King William. They are hired to investigate the irregularities that stand out during the study of the lands of England, in the Domesday Book. Together, they make a good crime-fighting team and try to stabilize the violent and unstable era of England’s history. all the books in the series are set in different counties. The first novel in the series was published under the title “The Wolves of Savernake” in 1993 by Fawcett Publishing. The novel depicts the time of the year 1086 when William the Conqueror appoints surveyors to record the resources of the lands of his kingdom. surveyors are welcomed by some and hated by others, as several murders occur during their surveys. One such murder occurs when a wealthy miller is killed by a wolf in Savernake Forest in the town of Bedwyn. The King appoints Ralph Delchard and Bret Grevase to investigate the murder. the two are caught in a dilemma about the killer, as they can’t decide if the town’s monks killed the rich miller or if his own wife betrayed him. However, the two continue to investigate the murders along with the surveys in the midst of several other murders taking place in the town of Bedwyn. The novel is full of witty and evocative adventures coupled with the lore, humor and historical legend of 11th-century England.
The second novel in the Domesday series was published under the title “The Ravens of Blackwater” in 1994 by Fawcett Publishing. In this novel, the author continues to describe the historically fascinating and colorful series of mysteries. The plot of the novel opens in the town of Maldon, which is controlled by the Fitzcorbucion family. This family, headed by Hamo Fitzcorbucion, is a rich and rapacious family. Hamo is the lord of Blackwater Castle, a thug who has amassed his wealth of all kinds. However, he is enraged by the murder of his eldest son, Guy, and decides to demand justice at all costs. Soon, Gervase Bret and Ralph Delchard arrive in town with royal duty to survey the town’s land. There are many irregularities here, accounting for them by the fitzcorbucion family. Despite growing tensions between the Saxon and Norman factions of the town, the two find time to relax with the town’s nuns. However, they are forced into dangerous situations due to Guy’s murder and Hamo’s determination for revenge. Author Edward Marston was highly praised for his efforts in writing an intriguing story full of energy, tenderness, suspense, heroism and trickery along with the beautiful depiction of England’s historical era.
