Born January 3, 1954, American writer Erik Larson grew up in Freeport, Long Island, New York. Having been raised in Brooklyn, he soaked up a lot of his surroundings during these early years. It was this education that would inform much of his career as a writer later on, as he began to develop his love of literature.
Studying later at the University of Pennsylvania, where he learned the history of Russia, he obtained a well-rounded education. graduating in 1976, he took a year off before studying at columbia university’s graduate school of journalism, graduating in 1978. all of this helped to ensure he had a solid background in literature and writing to earn a living, while while giving him his keen eye for detail and precision.

Initially starting out as a journalist, Larson landed a position with the Bucks County Courier Service in Levittown, Pennsylvania. it was here that he was to report on crime and nefarious happenings within the local area, thus learning many of the tools of the trade from him as a writer in the true crime genre. he then took this to other magazines and publications, as he brought his stories to an even wider audience, gaining more exposure.
He now lives in New York City, where he continues to write and teach, as well as owning a second home in Seattle, Washington. living in various places in the past, such as philadelphia, bristol, baltimore, san francisco and pennsylvania, he is now settled living with his wife and his three daughters. he continues to publish books as well, he has a number of books yet to come out which is something that doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon.

publishing his first book in 1992, he was well on his way to becoming a serious force to be reckoned with within the publishing industry and the world of non-fiction. by writing ‘the naked consumer’, he produced an exposé of how corporate entities engage in the lives of their clients, extremely prescient considering the issues rose to prominence in the years to come, especially considering the ‘no logo’ movement that saw popularity in seattle. while this was not as successful as he had hoped, it paved the way for his highly respected writing career to come in the years to come.
winning awards, he has managed to receive recognition and accolades, such as the edgar award he received in 2004 for his contribution to the best crime fact section. he now lives in his house in new york city, as well as in his house in seattle, he spends his time with his wife and his three daughters, in addition to continuing to write. With many more books planned on the horizon, Erik Larson shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, and this is something that will continue for the foreseeable future.

First published in 1992, this was an early entry on the topic of social marketing, a topic that was well ahead of its time, especially considering the rise of the internet. while many of its details may seem somewhat dated, it is still an interesting look at how the ideas came to be, as the reader gets to witness the early stages of the private/public data phenomenon. It’s also a great insight into how Erik Larson has progressed for anyone particularly interested in his work and where he came from as a writer.
Personal information is something that everyone appreciates, and with that in mind, is it something that should be sold as an asset to the highest bidder? Originally published in 2011, this is one of Larson’s most recent releases in the historical non-fiction genre, something he has become quite adept at over the years. Set just before World War II in early 1930s Germany, it follows the American ambassador’s life with his daughter and their attempts to reconcile the rise of the Nazi party at the time. There is also talk of producing a film adaptation of the novel, possibly starring Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman, with Michel Hazanavicius directing.
Hoping that the Nazi Party will become more moderate despite its sudden rise in popularity, US Ambassador William Dodd tries to come to terms with the truth and the full extent of its evils. Focusing primarily on the years between 1933 and 1937, he also traces the life of his daughter, Martha de He, who also lives there, and how he deals with it all. Despite his initial reluctance to face what is going on and her time getting involved in Berlin’s heady social scene after his divorce, they must soon realize the true nature of what is happening. how can they accept the truth? what will president roosevelt ask of them? what exactly will happen in the garden of beasts?
