LGBTQIAP Protagonists in Fantasy and Science Fiction – The Illustrated Page

This list is an ongoing work in progress that is mostly made up of books that I have read personally or books that are on my list of books to read. therefore, this list tends to reflect my personal reading preferences: more fantasy than science fiction, more female than male leads.

However, if you know of any other good books, mention them in the comments. also be sure to check out the comments if you want more recommendations. or if you have found other articles or lists, I would be happy to add them to the resource list. if you’re looking for lgbtq romance novels within the sff genres, i suggest you check out some of the smaller lgbtq publishers, like less than three publications, books for the blind, or books with bold strokes.

You are reading: Fantasy books with gay male characters

For the most part, the lists are sorted by gender, as fantasy books in particular can be sketchy about whether characters are gay/lesbian or bisexual (or pansexual). if a character is genderqueer and bisexual or pansexual, her book can be found in the genderqueer sublist. if a character is a rim or ace spec and also lesbian, gay, or bisexual, her book will be in both relevant sections. the same goes for lesbian, gay or bi trans women and trans men.

books with an author who shares the identity of the protagonist are marked as “#ownvoices”. books where the author is queer but with a different identity are marked as “#queerauthor”. If you are one of the authors listed here and would like your book to be marked as such (or not, as the case may be), you can let me know. contact info is on my about page.

      • the root of na’amen gobert tilahun is an urban fantasy novel where one of the two protagonists is a young gay man. #ownvoices
      • the last sun of k.d. edwards is an urban fantasy series with a gay protagonist. #ownvoices
      • the perfect killer by k.a. doore is a fantasy novel with an asexual protagonist and a m/m romantic subplot. Ellen Kushner’s #queerauthor
      • swordspoint is the quintessence of manners fantasy: there is no magic in this book. everything is conspiracy between different noble characters. Swordspoint focuses on Richard St. Vier, a master swordsman, and his partner Alec. both characters are bisexual. #ownvoices
      • The Fall of Kings by Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman is a novel set decades after Swordspoint, focusing on Alec’s son (Theron) and his mistress Basil. ends in tragedy. #ownvoices
      • tremontaine is a prequel to swordspoint that is available via serial box, which creates stories that are similar in format to television (one “episode” is released per week). tremontaine is currently ongoing and includes gay and bisexual male characters among the main cast. #ownvoices
      • ariah by b. r. sanders is the coming of age story of an elf named ariah, who is bisexual. the book also includes polyamory. #ownvoices
      • kate mcintyre’s death sniffer’s assistant is the first book in a fantasy mystery series. As of the second book (The Time Seer Tactic), the protagonist is canonically bisexual. #ownvoices
      • The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie (released February 2019) is an epic fantasy novel where kingdoms are built on the power of gods. one of the protagonists is bisexual and transmasculine.
      • witchmark by c.l. polk is a second world fantasy novel about a gay man with secret magical powers.
      • hope point by melissa scott and lisa barnett is a fantasy mystery starring two bisexual men, though there is no romance in this first installment of the series. #ownvoices
      • luck in the shadows by lynn flwelling is a type of traditional epic fantasy book that takes place in a world with openly gay and lesbian characters. There are two main characters, both male, and they are brought together in a later book.
      • Paul Cornwell’s The Fall of London is a police procedural urban fantasy with four main characters, one of whom is a gay man. . I have a review of the sequel, the cut streets.
      • tanya huff’s fire stone is a kind of quest for swords and sorcery with two bisexual men among the protagonists.
      • amberlough by lara elena donnelly is a dystopian book with a historical twist about a gay spy and her boyfriend.
      • door to fire by diane duane is a fantasy novel where everyone is bisexual. the main character is male.
      • kai ashante wilson’s sorcerer of the wastelands has a bisexual protagonist. note, it ends in tragedy.
      • alis franklin’s liesmith is a paranormal romance based on norse mythology. the protagonist is bisexual and the word is actually used.
      • mark anthony’s beyond the pale has two colorado characters thrown into a fantasy world. It’s listed has a male-male romance, but I couldn’t find anything in the reviews.
      • Chaz Brenchley’s Tower of the King’s Daughter is an epic fantasy in a historical-type setting with a protagonist gay.
      • the remains of steel from richard k. Morgan is a dark epic fantasy in which one of the three POV characters is a gay man.
      • nicky drayden’s prey of the gods is a futuristic science fiction novel set in south africa with one of the protagonists as a queer teenager.
      • sarah gailey’s river of teeth is a novel alternative history where one of the protagonists is a bisexual man in a relationship with a non-binary person. #queerauthor
      • cagebird by karin lowachee is the third novel in a science fiction series set in space that changes the narrator in each book. Cagebird’s narrator is either gay or bisexual. warning, there is quite graphic content related to rape and child abuse.
      • Beneath the citadel by destiny Soria there is a fantasy about a city built on prophecy. there is a m/m romance subplot. #queerauthor
      • eleven & future by amy rose capetta and cori mccarthy is a king arthur retelling where arthur is a queer teenager and merlin is a gay teenager.
      • stranger by rachel handle brown and sherwood smith has a gay protagonist among his five point of view characters. it’s a post-apocalyptic story.
      • the dream thieves by maggie stiefvater is a book about a group of characters searching for an ancient welsh king in virginia. It’s the second in a series, but it focuses on a gay character.
      • runebinder by alex r. kahler is the beginning of a new fantasy series.
      • proxy by alex london is a teen dystopia with two male leads, one of whom is gay.
      • coda by emma trevayne is a teen dystopia with a theme song and a bisexual male lead .

        • in the palace of the disappeared by aliette de bodard is an f/f retelling of “beauty and the beast”, where one woman is lesbian and the other is bisexual. #queerauthor
        • fire logic by laurie j. marks is a fantasy series set in a world with elemental powers and without sexism or homophobia. the main romance is f/f. #ownvoices
        • the hundred nights of hero by isabel greenberg is a fantastic graphic novel about an f/f couple who tell stories.
        • the red strings of fortune by j and yang is a fantasy novel where the female lead is bi or pan. her love interest is not binary. #queerauthor

        • The Steel Seraglio by Linda, Louise and Mike Carey is a fantasy story of a runaway group of concubines who create their own community. the most prominent romantic subplot is between two of the female characters.

        • merry shannon’s guardian sword is a traditional fantasy novel that seems to focus primarily on same-sex romance.

        • the girl who drowns by caitlín r. kiernan is a fantasy horror book listed as glbt. I saw it in a list of lesbian/bisexual characters, but I can’t confirm it. the red tree is another kiernan horror/fantasy that has reviews confirming lesbian relationships.
        • yoon ha lee’s candle, becky chambers, s.l. huang and rivers solomon is a serialized space opera with a queer female lead. #ownvoices for some of the authors, #queerauthor for others
        • karen memory by elizabeth bear is a steampunk set in the american west with a female/female romance. #ownvoices

        • ninefox gambit by yoon ha lee is a military science fictional novel set in a distant future totalitarian government. The heroine, Cheris, doesn’t have a romantic plot (it might change with future books), but her narration mentions how she is attracted to women and talks about her ex-girlfriend. #queerauthor
        • ann leckie’s provenance has a female lead who has a love interest who is female or possibly gender fluid.
        • a solomon river ghost cruelty unfolds on board from a ship generation and stars a queer-identified woman with a non-binary love interest. #queerauthor
        • failure to communication by kaia sønderby is a first contact novel about a bisexual autistic woman.
        • a memory called empire of arkady martine takes place in the distant future where a little the space station struggles to remain independent from a powerful empire. there is an f/f relationship. #ownvoices

        • kelley eskridge solitaire is a dystopian/cyberpunk story where the heroine has a girlfriend.
        • girls of paper and fire by natasha ngan is a second world fantasy novel about a girl who is taken as a demon king’s concubine and falls in love with one of the other concubines. #ownvoices
        • out of salem by hal schrieve is a paranormal/urban fantasy story about a lesbian werewolf and a non-binary zombie. launches March 5, 2019. #queerauthor

        • huntress by malinda lo is a fantasy adventure with a lesbian romance plot. she’s also written a few other series with lgbt characters at the forefront: i’ve heard a lot about ash, which is a lesbian retelling of cinderella. she also has a science fiction series that begins with an adaptation starring a bisexual girl. #ownvoices
        • down between sticks and bones by seanan mcguire is a portal fantasy novel where one of the protagonists has a girlfriend. Note, it’s not a happy ending. #ownvoices
        • fire of the faith by naomi kritzer has a lesbian heroine who is a music student in a fantasy world based on medieval italy. she doesn’t appear as anymore, but the heroine is sixteen and feels like an easy crossover.
        • after by e.k. johnston is a fantasy novel about what happens after the quest to save the world. focuses on an f/f romance.
        • dawn guardian by dianna gunn is a fantasy novel with an ace mc and an f/f romance.
        • otherbound by corinne duyvis is an already fantasy with a bisexual girl as the protagonist. #ownvoices (fun fact, corinne duyvis originated the term “#ownvoices”).
        • labyrinth lost by zoraida córdova is about a bisexual Latina girl from a family of matriarchal witches.
        • as I Descended from Robin Talley is a new paranormal version of Macbeth. warning, since it’s based on macbeth, most people die. #ownvoices
        • island of exiles by erica cameron is a second world fantasy book where the protagonist is a bisexual or pansexual warrior woman with a male love interest. note, the construction of the world includes a third gender. #queerauthor

        • julia ember’s kiss of the sailor is a fantasy of since it contains a romance between a Viking girl and a mermaid. releases May 4th.
