who is r.l.? thorn?

robert lawrence stine was born in columbus, ohio, in 1943. as a child, he says he was shy, fearful, and often felt like an outsider. he frequently draws on those memories of anxiety and panic when he writes his horror stories.

Because of his shyness and fear, stine often felt more comfortable writing in his room when he was younger. he found a typewriter in the attic of his family’s house at the age of nine and his life changed forever.

despite having a name that is now synonymous with horror for children and young adults, stine never planned on writing horror. That’s despite reading horror comics like The Vault of Horror, Tales from the Crypt, and The Witch’s Cauldron when he was a kid.

stine loved these comics so much that he went to the hairdresser every Saturday to get a haircut to read them, because his mother wouldn’t let him take the comics home.

but stine initially wanted to write humor, which he began to do in 1978, writing more than 100 joke books under the jovial pseudonym bob stine.

To this day, stine is very passionate about the similarities between laughter and fear, referring to it as the same visceral reaction. However, the rest was history when Stine wrote his first horror novel in 1986 and it became an instant bestseller: Blind Date.

A few years later, in 1989, Stine wrote the first book on Fear Street. according to her website, it became the best-selling young adult series in history.

Collectively, stine has sold over 400 million books that have been translated into 35 languages, making him one of the best-selling authors in history.

about the series

There are over 160 books on Fear Street published over four decades.

while r.l. Stine’s Goosebumps series is mid-grade horror, Fear Street is decidedly young adult. the dial is turned up on fright, blood and death. however, you can read this article on Goosebumps books in order if you are interested in learning more about that series.

the street series of fear originally started in the late 1980s until the 1990s with the continuation of the main series. there are also many spin-off series taking place in the same small town that were published during this time. The series then went on hiatus before Stine returned to Fear Street in the 2000s with more books.

The books take place in Shadyside, which is a fictional city in the United States on the East Coast. On a particular street within this city, the street of fear, danger always seems to lurk. Despite the horror stories that emerge time and again from this street, the teens of shadyside can’t seem to evade its clutches for long and inevitably end up sailing into its dark terror.

Each book within the series tends to follow a new character and a new mystery. the exception to this is when a book has a direct sequel, which will be made clear by its title.

However, even though each book contains a new murder mystery or paranormal event, the books tend to build on one another. the publication order of the fear street books is the same as the chronological order.

Unfortunately, many of the books on Fear Street have been out of print over the last 30 years. therefore, it can be difficult to acquire all the books on fear street that have been written. however, if you intend to try reading all 161 books of fear street, the recommended reading order is by series.

street adaptations of fear

rl stine’s scary street books have seen a recent resurgence with a 2021 netflix adaptation. a trilogy of scary street movies premiered on the streaming service in july 2021 with weekly installments. the three films are fear street part one: 1994, fear street part two: 1978, and fear street part three: 1666.

the films do not adapt any novel, or novels in particular, but rather borrow elements from the entire series. stine says it was interesting to see other writers approach his world of fear street. The adaptations have made up a 300-year history for Shadyside, stretching back to colonial times, as one would expect from the year 1666 in the title of the latest installment.

While the adaptations aren’t true to a specific book, stine says the movies are true to the feel of the books, which are about a cursed place in a very normal city. he also says that adaptations are scarier than novels.
