The series revolves around John May and Arthur Bryant, who work for the quirky crime unit, London, England. the time frame of the series is set between World War II and the present day and often switches to a flashback to depict the incidents involving the detectives’ past lives. The author has frequently used real-life London landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Gallery, underground rivers, tunnel networks, and various theatres, throughout the series. Based on the fictional Bryant and May department, the series is also known as the Peculiar Crimes Unit. John May and Arthur Bryant are cast as detectives from the Golden Age in present-day London, England. The two together lead the most venerable team of specialist police in London. the unit was founded during the time of the second world war to investigate the case that caused national scandals and great unrest among the people of london. Bryant is described as a hot-tempered, tech-mad man, while John May is said to be fluid and modern. The two lead a team of unusual misfits, based out of the London Underground station. it seems likely that his team members commit crimes rather than solve them. the cases depicted in the series show different styles of classic investigative stories. Being set in London, the series experiences numerous flashbacks along with progressive storytelling.

The first novel in the Bryant and May series was published under the title ‘Full Dark House’ by Bantam in 2003. The novel introduces the central characters John May and Arthur Bryant, for the first time surrounded by a suspenseful, edgy and darkly comic plot set in modern london. the two characters have maintained a lifelong friendship and have spent their years solving criminal cases with the help of their bright and moody natures. Bryant and can work as detectives in the London Police Department’s Peculiar Crimes Unit. In this novel, readers get to witness the detectives’ first and last investigations. the novel shows the two detectives’ attempts at fighting crimes with a modern style of detection. The novel’s plot begins with a description of a bomb explosion in present-day London. In this explosion, Detective John May loses his partner of 80 years, Arthur Bryant. The plot undergoes a flashback to show the fifty-year-old partnership of John May and Arthur Bryant. After savoring the happy moments of his past, May sets out to find clues to catch the killer. while investigating, he finds some old notes written by arthur bryant related to his first case. He becomes convinced that the murder is somehow related to his past and that one of the criminals has taken revenge on Bryant and May.

The plot of the novel once again shows flashbacks to his first case. The case has begun with the murder of a dancer who worked in the production of Orpheus in Hell. the dancer’s body is found without her feet. the detectives, who were quite young at the time, were forced to be pushed beyond their limits to solve the mystery. The drama becomes even darker as the killer continues his sins against London theaters at the time of World War II. Bryant uses his unorthodox technique along with John May’s brilliant police work to catch the killer. The killer was able to escape detection during that time and has returned in modern times and claimed Arthur Bryant’s life as part of his revenge. John May is also under constant threat of being killed, so he has to act quickly to catch the killer and stop him from killing others. The novel is filled with numerous twists and turns, unforgettable characters, and a mysterious plot that keeps readers guessing. is a witty and harrowing thriller starring an inhuman killer. The success of the novel helped earn it a nomination for the Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel in 2004. It even won the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel that same year.

The second novel in the series by Bryant and May was titled ‘The Water Room’ and was published in 2004 by Bantam. In this novel, Detectives Bryant and May continue to hunt down criminals using their 50-year professional partnership. this time they are involved in a multiple murder case full of deep secrets and lies. the murders show glimpses of the extreme passion that drives ordinary men and women to commit shocking crimes. Bryant and may have been successful in solving complicated cases in the past using his unconventional investigative style. They are not afraid to opt for unauthorized means to bring to light the truth related to the crimes. In this novel, the peculiar crime unit, headed by the two detectives, is under threat of being shut down forever if they make any more mistakes in their investigation. They seem to be about to make one of those mistakes when the older sister of one of Bryant’s friends is murdered in the basement of her home in Kentish Town.

bryant and you may notice suspicious things on the corpse of ruth singh, who was fully dressed for an outing. this was contrary to the fact that she never used to leave the house and go out for nothing. Although doctors revealed her death from a heart attack, Bryant and May seemed convinced that she did not die a natural death. the case was very different from the normal ones since they could not find any motive or any clue about the murderer. Soon, another death occurs in town. bryant and may succeed in discovering certain causes of ruth’s death. she received constant threats from real estate developers and racist threats to her two failed marriages. They also discover an antiquities collection network that traverses London’s underground river system. the two detectives rely on their experience and instincts to solve the mysterious crimes and bring justice. the novel nicely depicted the detectives’ insane attempts to solve the unrelated murders. The author, Christopher Fowler, has done a great job of showcasing London’s historical heritage while readers enjoyed reading the eventful description of the ‘Bryant and May’ series of novels.
