the author george macdonald was born on december 10, 1824 in aberdeenshire, scotland, and died on september 18, 1905 in surrey, england. his father (who was a farmer) was part of the glen coe macdonalds and comes from a family that suffered in the massacre of 1692. his parents were readers and his mother, in particular, received a classical education and learned many different languages. /p>
In addition to writing, he also worked as a poet and a Christian minister. He is a pioneer in fantasy literature and was the mentor of Lewis Carroll (fellow author who wrote the “Alice in Wonderland” series). Carroll was a Reverend whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson; He also took some pictures of Macdonald’s sons, as he was one of the best photographers of the Victorian era. It was Macdonald’s advice and the warm reception from many Macdonald children that convinced Carroll that he should submit his “Alice” story for publication.
Many notable authors have cited him as a major literary influence; which include j. r. r. tolkien, c. yes Lewis and Madeleine L’Engle. His best-known works are in the fantasy genre, and he used the genre to examine the human condition, which is what influenced the authors mentioned above. his non-fantasy works were also influential and were among the earliest realist Scottish novels; he has been given credit for creating the kailyard school of scottish writing. he claimed to write, not for children, but for those who are like children; regardless of his age.
macdonald graduated from the university of aberdeen; He then moved to London and studied at Highbury College for congregational ministry.

In 1850, he was appointed to the position of pastor of the Trinity Arundel Congregational Church. His sermons, which preached about God’s unconditional love and how everyone would meet him, were received with little favor. his salary was cut in half. He would continue to work in a ministerial work in the city of Manchester, but he left this job due to health problems.

Even though he was a Christian (and incorporated some things into his stories), he still criticized certain elements of the religion. especially parts of Calvinist doctrine (which he grew up with) and he felt certain things were unfair in it. he even burst into tears when told of the doctrine of predestination, even though he was informed that he was a chosen one. later novels show distaste for the concept that god chooses love for some but denies it to others.

“The Princess and the Goblin” is the first novel in the “Princess Irene and Curdie” series and was released in the year 1872. Princess Irene lives in a huge castle which is located in the lonely and wild region full of of mountains.
He finds a steep, spiral staircase that leads to a bewildering maze of passageways that haven’t been used for many years. it’s full of locked doors and another ladder.
what is at the top of this ladder? Will the ring she was given be enough to protect her against the threat of the goblins lurking beneath the mountain?
Some feel that by reading this book, you can see where fantasy novels began. fans of the novel found this to be a lovely and fine read, and you can see why authors who liked it did. this is an author with a great voice, and kindness. this is a well written book for the themes of bravery and fantasy; children will also be able to relate the characters found in the novel. whether you are a young person or an adult, you will find something you like in this book; you will see some things that tolkien would use later, in his works.
“The Princess and Curdie” is the second novel in the “Princess Irene and Curdie” series and was published in the year 1883. Princess Irene’s great-grandmother has a job for Curdie that is going to be difficult for him. .

however, he won’t be doing it alone, she’s kind enough to provide him with a companion for the journey. however, she is the ugliest and weirdest creature curdie has ever seen. she remains the most loyal friend she could have ever hoped for from her.
some liked this one a bit more than the first book in the series. fans of the novel found this to be a great story and enjoyed reading it with their children. there is something to think deeply about or that speaks to them. Some like the friendship that grows between Lina and Curdie to be something wonderful and beautiful to watch. Some find Macdonald’s work simply wonderful and felt that few authors today could touch this author’s solemn beauty.
“Phantastes” is a novel by George Macdonald that was published in the year 1858. It begins the day after Anodos turned twenty-one. he finds an elderly fairy (which he discovers she might be her grandmother) in a desk. To open the desk, Anodos uses a key that he inherited from his father. he is shown a place called fairyland in a vision and wakes up the next day to find her room turning into a forest. is located in the land of fairies.
He meets a mother and daughter who warn him about two trees (the alder and the ash), which are trying to destroy him. someone tells him that tree spirits can leave their hosts and roam the land of fairies.
He roams the world of fairies, who live in flowers, which shine, but will die if the fairies leave them.
