what do john lange, jeffery hudson and michael douglas have in common? Nothing more, except that all of these names were used by Michael Crichton as his pseudonyms. Michael Crichton, frequently cited as the “father of the techno-thriller”, was a multifaceted person. he was an accomplished author, director, screenwriter, physician, and producer. Born October 23, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Crichton displayed his talent for writing from an early age. He began his studies at Harvard University in 1960 and was an exceptionally bright student. He later enrolled in Harvard Medical School and began publishing his papers during the period he studied there to become a physician. He eventually earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1969, but never became a licensed physician. by the time he graduated, he had already published nearly a dozen suspense novels, although most of his early work was published under his pseudonym. therefore, his decision to embark on a writing career makes a lot of sense and further justified his career change when he became the best-selling storyteller for the next three decades. During the pre-Rowling era, more specifically the late 1990s, Forbes estimated his annual earnings at more than $20 million. In 1994, he became the only author in history to simultaneously top the TV, movie and book sales charts with ER, Jurassic Park and Popular respectively. In fact, the film adaptation of Jurassic Park was such a phenomenal success that Michael Crichton became a world-famous author during the 1990s.
the creation of an author
crichton knew from an early age that writing was his thing. He began writing travel articles for the New York Times at the age of 14. he was unusually tall as a teenager and his height helped him become a basketball star during his high school years. however, his height also alienated him from his classmates. despite being academically brilliant, he had trouble socializing. After graduating from Roslyn High School in 1960, he decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a writer and enroll in literature at Harvard University. but his talent for writing was not appreciated by the faculty and his grades were quite low. Fed up with poor grades, he deliberately plagiarized a paper by George Orwell and sent it in as a class assignment, only to expose a faculty member that he believed he was evaluating him poorly for no reason. confirming his doubt, the professor gave him a b- on that paper. Eventually, Crichton left literature and changed his concentration to biological anthropology. He earned his BA summa cum laude in 1965. Immediately after his graduation, he served as a visiting professor at the University of Cambridge for a year. he also received the henry russell shaw scholarship and traveled through europe and north africa for a year.

After his return to the United States, Crichton began studying medical sciences at Harvard Medical School and earned his medical degree in 1969. He wasn’t actually a “doctor” as he used to pass out every time that he had to work with blood and was often unsettled by laboratory experiences. he tried to get off medicine, but eventually passed with brilliant results. Crichton supported himself by writing novels under different pseudonyms. His most widely used pseudonym was John Lange (Lang is a German surname meaning long, referring to his height of 6 feet 9 inches). he wrote 7 spy novels under this name: odds, zero one, easy going, zero cool, the poison business, go down to the grave, binary, and drug of choice. Under another pseudonym, Jeffery Hudson, he wrote “A Case of Necessity,” a novel with many references to the people of Harvard. the book won the edgar award for best mystery of the year.
During his final year of medical school, Crichton rose to authorial stardom with the publication of the Andromeda Strain, his first bestseller. The Andromeda Strain was also the first notable work in the techno-thriller genre that Crichton spawned with his novels. In 1971, Robert Wise directed the film adaptation of Andromeda, which also became a hit. Crichton’s fame helped him gain the cooperation of hospital directors with research work for his first non-fiction publication titled “Five Patients: The Hospital Explained.” Crichton once again showcased his abilities as a versatile author and was selected as the 1970 Medical Writer of the Year by the American Medical Writers Association for this work. In 1969, Crichton became a postdoctoral fellow at the Jonas Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla, California. in 1970, he finally decided that this was not his path and took up writing as his full-time career. Crichton later joked about people’s reaction to his decision to change careers: “Leaving medicine to become a writer seemed to most people like leaving the supreme court to become a bail bondsman.” p>

Crichton’s literary works are heavily influenced by recent technological advances. her most notable novels are andromeda tension, jurassic park, congo, sphere, rising sun, revelation, the lost world, timeline, fuselage, dam, state of fear, and next. he was a prolific writer with the ability to write over 10,000 words every day. More than 200 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and his work has been translated into at least twenty languages. Tight plots, scientific and technological details, and large-scale systems failure are the hallmarks of Crichton’s works. he was very meticulous about the technological aspects of his plots and used to do tedious research before writing his fictions. Crichton’s early works had another recurring feature. most of his early novels are influenced by existing literary works. the andromeda strain is highly influenced by h. gram. Wells’, the war of the world, congo, taken from king solomon’s mines and eaters of the dead, by sir henry rider haggard, is a partial rereading of beowulf. Crichton had an uncanny ability to revitalize classic literary works within the futuristic framework of high technology. however, in his later works he moved away from this trend and emphasized more on issues concerning our daily lives.

He also directed seven films including westworld, coma and the great train robbery. In addition to that, he ran a software company called Filmtrack and ventured into the video game industry with Timeline Computer Entertainment, a computer game production company. He also created the immensely popular drama series ER which aired in 1994. Crichton wrote the screenplay for Extreme Close Up in 1974 and Twister in 1996 (co-written with his wife at the time). Crichton, being a computer expert, wrote “Electronic Life” in 1983, a pioneering work in information technology that introduced basic programming. he was also a famous art collector and an avid traveler.
crichton was a lifelong practitioner of meditation. he also experimented with auditory projection, clairvoyance, and other spiritual methods. In 1992, Crichton was selected to People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People list.

Michael Crichton suffered from cancer for the last few years of his life and died at the age of 66 on November 5, 2008. However, his legacy is likely to entertain generations to come. Steven Spielberg perfectly summed up the life and work of this legend when he said that “Michael’s talent surpassed even his own Jurassic Park dinosaurs.” Michael Crichton is a prominent figure in recent literature, both figuratively and literally.
