This allows Lee to delve into complex adult topics of race and class with finesse.
Songbirds and their symbolism prevail throughout the novel. at one point the father exclaims, “he shoots all the blue jays they want, they must remember that it is a sin to kill a nightingale.” the child character is confused but discovers that mockingbirds never harm anything else. “They do nothing but sing their hearts out for us,” a neighbor tells him.
A stage play based on the book was written and adapted for the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird. The film version of her book was also a huge success, earning eight Academy Award nominations. Gregory Peck won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Atticus Finch.
In 1990 a play based on the book was adapted and performed in monroeville, alabama. the play is performed every May with a cast made up of local citizens. the city of monroeville, alabama has called itself “the literary capital of alabama”. The novel is reportedly so beloved in Monroeville, Alabama that locals cite the book as if it were scripture. Harper Lee has refused to attend any of the theatrical performances based on her book because she claims to be totally disgusted by anything that affects the fame of the book.
To Kill a Mockingbird has been the center of controversy since it was first published and even more so after being introduced to classroom study. the book is riddled with racial slurs and talks about rape, which has led many to question whether it’s appropriate to share it with students.

after to kill a mockingbird, harper lee continued to work on literary projects but they were not published. for the most part, she lived a quiet life and avoided publicity. she began turning down interviews with the complaint that many of the questions were the same. she made it a strict policy to stop talking to the media about her book and rebuffs publicity with a “hell no!”
In 2001, Lee earned his place in the Alabama Honor Academy and in 2006 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Notre Dame.

Harper Lee initially wrote Go Post a Watchman Before You Kill a Mockingbird, but it was rejected by the publisher. Lee had reworked the manuscript so much that it eventually became To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Post a Watchman is a novel that was first published in July 2015.
