It’s been 22 years since Ginny woke up, terrified, to see the huge shape of a dead Basilisk and Harry covered in blood. It’s been 22 years since Harry destroyed her diary that had haunted her for almost a year.

in recognition, here’s a list of the top ten harry/ginny moments left out of the movies.

#10

harry found himself pulling out [the marauder’s map] just to look at ginny’s name in the girls’ dorm, wondering if the intensity with which she stared at it might interrupt her sleep, that she would somehow know she was thinking of the. her, hoping she was okay. – deathly hallows (256)

this is one of the few consolations for harry (a little neurotic) during the living hell of the deathly hallows.

ginny’s fondness for sending singing letters to harry:

His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad, his hair is as dark as a blackboard. he wishes [it was] mine, he is truly divine, the hero who conquered the dark lord.” – chamber of secrets (178)

“ginny weasley, blushing furiously, appeared with a recovery card she had made herself, which sang raucously unless harry kept it shut under his fruit bowl.” – prisoner of azkaban (137)

the fact that harry doesn’t actually throw away his get well card (which he has had no problem doing with other unwanted gifts like hagrid’s rock cakes and later ron and hermione’s chocolate honeydukes) might insinuate latent feelings. Or maybe she just didn’t want to get out of bed.

I didn’t want to leave dumbledore’s side, I didn’t want to move anywhere. Hagrid’s hand on his shoulder was shaking. then another voice said, “harry, come on.” a much smaller, warmer hand had grasped his and was pulling him up. she obeyed the pressure from him without really thinking about it.” – Half-Blood Prince (570)

ginny is a crutch for harry during one of his most severe periods of grief. the fact that she cut herself off from dumbledore’s funeral meant that this part of their relationship was never shown on screen.

give it a break, hermione!” Ginny said, and Harry was so amazed, so grateful, that he looked up. “From the looks of it, Malfoy was trying to use an Unforgivable Curse, you should be glad Harry had something good up his sleeve!”

“well of course i’m glad harry wasn’t cursed!” Hermione said, clearly hurt. “But you can’t call that sectumsempra spell good, ginny, look where it landed! and I would have thought, seeing what this has done to your chances in the match…”

“oh, don’t start acting like you understand quidditch,” ginny snapped, “you’ll just embarrass yourself. – Half-Blood Prince (496)

Unexpectedly, Ginny chooses to defend Harry, even though Harry has just made one of the worst decisions of his life. She is not appalled by Harry’s use of such a curse and is the only one to point out that this outcome is better than the alternative: her pragmatism is a defining trait, but without those moments in the movies, a significant aspect of her personality. has changed. she is lost.

Harry Potter,” he said very quietly. his voice could have been part of the fire he spits. “the boy who lived.”

None of the Death Eaters moved. were waiting: everything was waiting. hagrid was struggling, and bellatrix was panting, and harry inexplicably thought of ginny, and her burning gaze, and the feel of her lips on his…”-Deathly Hallows (564)

ginny was going to be harry’s last thought. that speaks for itself.

three dementor attacks in a week, and all romilda vane does is ask me if it’s true you have a hippogriff tattooed on your chest.”

“what did you say?”

“I told him it’s a Hungarian Horntail,” Ginny said, turning a page of the newspaper without doing anything. “much more macho.”

“thank you” harry said, smiling. “And what did you tell her that she has rum?”

“a pygmy puff, but I didn’t say where”. – Half-Blood Prince (500)

There are two things the movie leaves out that are shown in this scene: firstly, harry and ginny’s shared sense of humor, and secondly, ginny being up there with ron in humor, a character trait that in the movies is only held by fred and george.

Are you okay, Harry? Ginny asked quietly.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Harry snapped. the lump in her throat was painful. she didn’t understand why an easter egg should have made him feel that way.

“You seem really down lately,” ginny insisted. “You know, I’m sure if you just talked to cho…”

“It’s not Cho I want to talk to,” Harry snapped.

“Then who is it?” Ginny asked, watching him closely.

“I…”

looked around to make sure no one was listening; Madam Pince was several shelves past her, stomping on a stack of books for a frantic-looking Hannah Abbott.

“I wish I could talk to Sirius,” he muttered. “but I know I can’t.”

ginny continued to watch him thoughtfully. More to have something to do than because she really wanted something, Harry unwrapped his easter egg, broke off a large chunk, and popped it into his mouth.

“Well,” Ginny said slowly, helping herself to some egg, “if you really want to talk to Sirius, I hope we can think of a way to do it…”

“Come on,” Harry said in a muffled voice. “with umbridge watching the fires and reading all our mail?”

“The thing about growing up with Fred and George,” Ginny said thoughtfully, “is that you start to think anything is possible if you have enough courage.”

harry looked at her. maybe it was the effect of the chocolate – lupine had always advised eating some after encounters with dementors – or simply because he had finally said out loud the desire that had been burning inside him for a week, but felt a little more hopeful…

– harry potter and the order of the phoenix (578)

This scene gives traction to their friendship. without it, movies seemed to lack dimension. shows that ginny and harry are close enough that harry lets his guard down.

this scene also gives an insight into ginny’s character: ginny’s response is not sympathy. instead, he offers a solution, in true Harry style, by taking action.

It’s all topped off with a massive amount of chocolate, which, frankly, makes any scene fantastic.

ginny, listen… I can’t get involved with you anymore. We have to stop seeing each other. we can’t be together.”

he said, with a strange crooked smile, “it’s for some stupid and noble reason, isn’t it?”

“It’s been like…something out of someone else’s life these past few weeks with you. but I can’t… we can’t… I have to do things by myself now.

“voldemort uses people close to his enemies. he already used you as bait once, and that was just because you were my best friend’s sister. think of the danger you will run if we continue like this. he will know, he will find out. he will try to get me out of you.”

“what if I don’t care?” Ginny said fiercely.

“I care,” Harry said. “How do you think I would feel if this [was] your funeral…and it was my fault…”

She looked away from him, over the lake.

“I never gave up on you,” he said. “Not really. I always waited….hermione told me to get on with my life, maybe go out with other people, relax a little with you, because I could never talk if you were in the room, remember? and she thought you could have a little more attention if I were a little more — myself.”

“Smart girl, that Hermione,” said Harry, trying to smile. “I just wish I had asked you earlier. we could have been ages…months…years maybe…”

“But you’ve been too busy saving the wizarding world,” Ginny said, half laughing.

“well… I can’t say I’m surprised. I knew this would happen in the end. i knew you wouldn’t be happy unless you were hunting voldemort. Maybe that’s why I like you so much.” – Half-Blood Prince (647)

There is an underlying thread to this scene of shared trauma. There’s a sense that Ginny wants revenge for possessing her, and she understands Harry’s singular all-consuming need to destroy Voldemort.

Harry’s reasoning for leaving Ginny behind is emotionally charged. For the first time since Chamber of Secrets, he, Harry, mentions Ginny’s possession.

oh, stop feeling misunderstood,” said hermione sharply. “look, the others have told me what you heard last night in the extendable ears-“

“yes?” Harry grunted, hands in his pockets as he stared at the snow that was now falling thick outside. “everyone has been talking about me, how about you? well, I’m getting used to it…”

“We wanted to talk to you, Harry,” Ginny said, “but since you’ve been hiding since we got back-“

“I didn’t want anyone to talk to me,” said Harry, growing increasingly irritated.

“Well that was a bit stupid of you,” Ginny said angrily, “since you don’t know anyone but me who’s been possessed by you-know-who, and I can tell you how that feels.”

Harry went very still as the impact of these words hit him. then he turned around.

“I forgot”, he said.

“How lucky,” Ginny said coldly.

“I’m sorry,” Harry said, and he meant it. “So…so, do you think I’m being possessed?”

“well, can you remember everything you’ve been doing?” Ginny asked. “Are there big blank periods where you don’t know what you’ve been doing?”

Harry racked his brain.

“no”, he said.

“So you-know-who has never possessed you,” Ginny said simply. “When he did it to me, I couldn’t remember what she had been doing for hours at a time. I’d find myself somewhere and I wouldn’t know how I got there.”

Harry hardly dared believe him, but his heart was lightening almost despite itself. – order of the phoenix (499-500)

this is the no. 1 because harry, throughout the books, is so used to dealing with his own problems.

Ginny’s no-nonsense tone, cutting through Harry’s state of mind, is a welcome relief, and while Hermione and Ron try to help, it’s Ginny who finally snaps Harry out of his depression.

It was at this point that Ginny transitioned from a supporting player to an essential character: her pragmatism, strength, and humor (not to mention her excellent Quidditch game) indicated that she would become a force to be reckoned with.
