The final problem of the walking dead essentially boils down to a dispute over property law. while the walking dead represented a violent threat and life as we knew it on earth for 192 issues, they represent something very different in this 193rd and final issue. the narrative jumps many years to a quiet farmhouse in the country. there we see an adult carl grimes, his wife sophia and his daughter andrea, peacefully living their days. That peace is shattered when a walker stumbles onto Grime property and Carl strikes it down with a very familiar sword.
walker spawns are extremely rare nowadays. In fact, an elderly Earl Sutton later tells Carl that this walker must have been the first civilization of his has seen in 10 years. but how could a single walker get through all the city’s defenses? well, someone familiar to readers is to blame. Maggie and Glenn’s now-grown son, Hershel Greene, has brought her carnival sideshow of walkers to town. he has a group of walkers in a covered wagon that charges the townspeople a pretty penny to gawk. Sure enough, the walker Carl left behind was one of his.

But in this brave new world, Carl hasn’t just killed a walker, he’s destroyed another citizen’s property. the real undead are a precious and expensive commodity nowadays. Though the new Sheriff (who is Sheriff Kapoor revealed on the fake 194 cover) is reluctant to do so, he has to bring Carl in for a hearing with the local magistrate. while in the hearing, the president of the colonies herself, maggie greene, appears to speak with the judge. Carl’s punishment, rather than a debilitating fine, will be to find a walker to replace Hershel’s property. Carl responds to this good news by killing the rest of Hershel’s pack in the dead of night.
it’s a bit disappointing to see what has become of hershel greene, more for what it means to maggie’s character than to hershel himself. Failsons are not lacking in the undead universe. Just an earlier issue, one of those failsons, Sebastian Milton, killed off the hero of the entire series in a bratty tirade. The problem is that the blame for these privileged little princes often falls on their mothers, who were too busy rebuilding society to raise them properly. There’s no question that Maggie had to sacrifice a lot to keep the colonies going, including effectively raising her own child. it just feels weird that carl turned out to be a perfect christ-like figure as her father, even though her father dropped him off at earl sutton’s store for 40-odd issues.

whatever, rant. Carl’s job is that of a messenger. travel to the far reaches of society to deliver important messages. after killing the hershel walkers, he comes out once more. we discover a couple of important things about this distant future world. For one thing, Rick Grimes is still a legend. Grimes’ name goes far in these places and is one of the reasons Carl didn’t get a ticket. Furthermore, the “colonies” led by Maggie will join the Western Alliance very soon. It appears that the political landscape of the world is slowly putting itself back together and that the continental United States may soon return to being a single political entity.
carl meets lydia on the way. she still wears rick’s hat, which must be worth a fortune as an artifact. however, Carl doesn’t want to get it back. lydia has a family of her own now, but she is still clearly in love with carl. Carl is resisting her charms of licking his eye sockets for the time being.
