zane gray was one of the prominent authors of america who used to write his novels based on the western fiction genre. He was born Pearl Zane Gray on January 31, 1872 in Zanesville, Ohio, United States. Zane died on October 23, 1939 at the age of 67 in Altadena, California. his unique style of writing was based on the adventure and fiction novels that showed the idealized vision of the old west. Zane’s hometown of Zanesville was founded by his mother’s ancestors. Having spent his growing up years in Zanesville, he developed a keen interest in baseball, fishing, and writing. all these hobbies later added to his fame. Zane Gray joined the University of Pennsylvania after winning a baseball scholarship. He studied dentistry in college at the wish of his father and graduated in 1896. Continuing his interest in baseball even after graduation, he began playing for a minor league team for a short time in West Virginia. He was usually joined by his brother Carl Grey, who continued to play with the Pittsburgh Pirates until 1902. Zane used to visit Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania frequently to fish on the Delaware River while studying dentistry. During one of those fishing events, he met Lina Roth, who later became his wife. Lina proved to be a great motivation for Zane, who not only helped him focus on his writing but also encouraged him in his work. With Lina’s help, Zane published his first story based on fishing in 1902. Zane and Lina were married in 1905 after which they moved to Lackawaxen. In the year 1907, Zane Gray became very excited about visiting the West after first visiting there on an Arizona mountain expedition with one of his friends. It was in the year 1910 that his first novel based on Western fiction was published. Lina also played an important role in it. The novel became a bestseller, prompting Zane to write and publish one popular novel after another. In 1912 he wrote the best book of his life and with its success he managed to set up a film company. However, after a few years, Zane sold the company to Paramount Pictures owner Jesse Lasky.

He died in the year 1939 and his body was buried in the Union Cemetery in Lackawaxen in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania government has developed a museum in his name near Union Cemetery.

The opening sequence of the novel shows Madeline Hammond getting off a train at the El Cajon train station in New Mexico. it was during the midnight hour when she got off the train. she realized that the place was nothing less than a great dark space filled with cool winds. the place was strangely empty with silence spread far and wide on all sides. the driver tells her that she won’t find anyone there, to which she replies that her brother would come looking for her. she asked if she could find a hotel or shelter in case her brother didn’t show up. the driver tells her about nearby hostels and hotels and warns her that the place was not safe for her to be alone. he informs her that the town is filled with mostly Mexicans, miners, and cowboys at night and that they can be dangerous at times. he tells her to quickly find some hotel to be safe from the tense situation that has arisen due to the revolution on the other side of the border.
