- the project is called storycorps (pronounced “story core”).
- since its founding in 2003, storycorps has interviewed more than 600,000 participants from across the country filming in a recording booth, using the free storycorps app or other digital platforms to preserve their stories. it is the largest single collection of human voices ever assembled.
- Recorded interviews are added to the storycorps archive, housed at the Center for American Popular Life at the Library of Congress.
- The first storybooth recording site opened on 23 October 2003 in the great central terminal. storycorps currently operates a storybooth in atlanta.
- our mobilebooth travels across the country, partnering with local public radio stations in various cities for a month at a time. the storycorps mobile tour kicked off on may 19, 2005.
- with the permission of the participants, edited stories from each booth are broadcast on a partner public radio station. Select stories are produced by Storycorps for national broadcast on NPR. Selected stories are also produced as animations, seen on public television stations across the country and millions more online.
- storycorps has released five books: Listening Is Loving (2007), Mom : a celebration of mothers of storycorps, all there is: love stories of storycorps (2012), ties that bind: stories of love and gratitude from the first ten years of storycorps (2013), and vocations: purpose and passion of work (2016).
- storycorps is an independently funded 501(c)(3) organization. We ask for a voluntary donation at the end of each recording session to support our work and guarantee access to everyone. we raise funds throughout the year to help cover the costs of recording, archiving, and preserving each interview and to continue our mission.

about storycorps
Founded in 2003 by Dave Isay, StoryCorps has given people of all backgrounds and beliefs, in thousands of towns and cities in all 50 states, the opportunity to record interviews about their lives. The organization preserves the recordings in its archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the largest single collection of human voices ever assembled, and shares selected stories with the public through the StoryCorps podcast, NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books. these powerful human stories reflect the wide range of American experiences, wisdom, and values; generate empathy and connection; and remind us how much more we have in common than what divides us.
storycorps is especially committed to capturing and amplifying the least heard voices in the media. the storycorps mobile booth, an airstream trailer that the organization has transformed into a traveling recording booth, tours the country year-round collecting the stories of people from all over the country. With the 2015 ted award given to isay, storycorps launched a free mobile app that puts the storycorps experience completely in the hands of users and allows anyone, anywhere, to record meaningful conversations with another person and upload the audio to the storycorps library. congress. storycorps also records interviews at storybooths located in chicago and atlanta.
Shooting a traditional storycorps interview couldn’t be easier. At one of our locations, you and a loved one, or anyone else you choose, will meet with a trained facilitator who will walk you through the interview process. then you are taken into a quiet recording room and seated across from your interview partner, each of you facing a microphone. the facilitator presses “record” and they share a 40-minute conversation. After the session, a link to your interview is emailed to you and a digital file goes to the Library of Congress, where it will be preserved for generations to come. If you can’t get to a recording booth or prefer to do the interview at home, the Storycorps app serves as a facilitator, guiding users through the interview experience, from recording to archiving and sharing their stories with the world. provides easy-to-use tools to help people prepare interview questions; record high-quality conversations on your mobile devices; and upload the audio to archive.storycorps.org, which serves as the home for these recordings and also provides interviews and editing resources. in 2020, storycorps introduced storycorps connect, a new video-based platform that makes it possible for two people in different locations to conduct a storycorps interview remotely in light of covid-19.
