As we shared in our previous list, The 150 Best Children’s Picture Books To Read Aloud, I recently asked friends in the Childhood 101 community to share their favorite read-aloud titles, both picture books as chapter books/novels. This post shares 50 great read-aloud chapter books from that survey, with titles that are suitable for children ages 6-12. I love that these books have been recommended by parents and teachers!

Top 50 Read Aloud Chapter Books for Kids 6-12

Obviously, those of you with children in this age range may have competent, independent readers and reading aloud to your child may no longer be something you spend a lot of time doing. With a voracious 10-year-old reader in our house, I totally get it, but I encourage you to consider continuing to read aloud together when you get the chance.

Why read aloud with my older child?

In a nutshell, because books are full of words! Research has shown that a well-developed vocabulary has been linked to better school performance.

A child listens and understands at a higher level than he can read independently until he reaches high school. Reading aloud allows your child to hear and interact with texts that are beyond their own reading level, which is great for vocabulary development.

Beyond that, books teach. Books invite conversations with children about important social issues and personal challenges, so when you read a book like this together, you have the perfect opportunity to talk with your child about topics that can be complicated, such as friendship, prejudice, bullying or homelessness.

reading aloud with your child makes reading and your child’s relationship with books more enjoyable, which will hopefully help make books a place they turn to when they need to rest and relax. the magical escape into a great book can be a wonderful stress reliever.

we read with our daughters even once they became independent readers, the way we spend our time reading aloud has changed, but it is still an important part of our day.

for me it is an important moment for the connection. if I’m reading, or if she’s reading, hanging out physically together, usually hanging out in her bed or mine, is important. it’s an easy way to maintain a connection with an older child.
