After former President Donald Trump left office, several of his former advisers cashed in on book deals that generated lucrative advances. But many of those books failed to match that buzz with sales, Politico reported Thursday.
The narrative books by former national security adviser john bolton and former fbi director james comey that were published during the trump presidency made waves and were huge commercial successes, selling more than 600,000 copies each, per politician. “A Warning,” an anonymously written insider account of the Trump administration that was later revealed to have been written by former Department of Homeland Security official Miles Taylor, also topped the New York Times bestseller list after its publication in 2019.

But books published after Trump’s presidency, both those praising and criticizing Trump, generated comparatively poor sales figures, according to npd bookscan figures obtained by Politico.
npd bookscan figures, politico noted, do not include 100% of hardcover sales and do not capture audiobook or ebook sales. But they still show how there is a mismatch between the supply of post-Trump memoirs and the demand for such books.
- Trump’s best-performing book, “Take Back Trump’s America” by Peter Navarro, has sold more than 80,000 copies.
- Former Attorney General Bill Barr’s memoir “One Damn Thing After Another” has sold just over 64,000 copies, per npd book scan. (A Barr spokesperson told Politico the book has sold between 140,000 and 150,000 copies in total.)
- Former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s book “Here’s the Deal” sold just over 42,000 copies. (A spokesperson for publisher Simon & Schuster told Politico they were “pleased” with the book’s sales.)
- Former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham’s critical memoir on Trump, “I’ll Take Your Questions Now,” sold just over 38,000 copies.
- one book written by dr. Scott Atlas, which advised the White House on Covid, sold just over 27,000 copies.
- Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’s book “The Chief’s Chief,” which contained the bombshell revelation that Trump tested positive for COVID before a debate with Joe Biden, sold fewer than 22,000 copies .

“Since he left office, the trump memoir hasn’t done very well,” an unnamed editorial executive told Politico. “every single person who’s written a book so far was telling stories we pretty much already knew.”
Another publishing industry source told Politico that “every White House memoir so far has been a loser except Navarro,” saying “Barr, Conway, Birx and Esper all lost money.”
“It’s boring people making money saying the same things they’ve been saying all along,” the person said. “If you don’t have big news and you don’t tell Maga what she most wants to hear, you’re wasting your publisher’s money. The amazing thing is that Conway, Barr, Birx and Esper got over 5 million [upfront money] between them” .
