Amazon’s kindle is a big deal. both hardware and digital service changed the way books, magazines, comics and more are read every day. Unfortunately, customers can’t just download kindle books and read them through any app.
For digital rights management (DRM) reasons, all Kindle eBooks are locked to Kindle hardware. These digital books use Amazon’s proprietary AZW file format, although Kindle tablets also support MOBI files. That makes reading these eBooks outside of the Kindle bubble almost impossible. The good news is that drm protection can be removed with free tools, but it’s important that you don’t share your e-books with anyone, as this could break copyright laws.

Download the AZW file(s)
Due to digital rights management, the eBook cannot be easily downloaded to any computer. Readers must have a hardware Kindle linked to their Amazon account. otherwise, they’ll see an error message that “You’ve selected content that isn’t supported by any of your registered devices.”
That said, even if the ebook is read via the kindle app on windows 10, android or ios, without a real kindle device linked to an amazon account, the kindle ebooks will not download.

Step 1: With the amazon website loaded, click your name and then select account from the dropdown menu.
Step 2: Select Manage content and devices listed under Devices and digital content.
Step 3: Click the three-dot actions button next to the destination eBook, as shown above.
step 4: click download & transfer via usb in the popup menu
Step 5: A pop-up appears with the registered kindle selected. click the yellow download button.
The AWZ file will download to the default location on your PC, not to the listed Kindle device.

convert using caliber (windows/macos/linux)
calibre is software specifically designed to transfer and modify digital text in various formats. Fortunately, it won’t consume much of your device’s memory either. this software supports countless input formats including mobi, html, prc and azw.

Download and install DRM Removal Tool
To remove the drm from your kindle ebooks, you will need to download an older version of caliber, version 4.23.0. Once you have downloaded and installed the software, you will also need to download the alf apprentice drm removal tool. instead of the latest version, you want to download and install v6.8.1, which will work with caliber version 4. simply click on the zipped drrm_tools folder to download it to your computer, then unzip the folder by right-clicking and selecting extract all (or as you would normally unzip folders on your computer).

These are the steps to install the caliber drm removal tool plugin.
Step 1: Start caliber and select preferences from the top right menu.
Step 2: Scroll down and under Advanced, click Plugins.
step 3: at the bottom right, click load plugin from file, then select the zipped folder ofdrm_plugin on your computer in the pop-up window.
step 4: click open. caliber will now install the plugin.
step 5: restart caliber.
Adding your Kindle serial number to Calibre
This is where things get a bit tricky, but we’ll walk you through the following steps. you need to insert your kindle serial number into caliber and this is how it is done:
step 1: select preferences again in the top menu.
step 2: click advanced, then select plugins.
step 3: double-click the line that says file type.
Step 4: Double-click the dedrm plugin.
step 5: select the first option that says eink kindle ebooks and click accept.
Step 6: Now, you need to find and enter your kindle serial number.
step 7: on most kindles, you can find this by going to settings > all settings > device options > device information on your kindle. you should see information about your kindle, including the serial number.
Step 8: If you’re not sure where to find your kindle’s serial number, do a quick google search for “serial location” plus your kindle model, e.g. “10th gen paperwhite” should help.
step 9: enter the serial number without spaces in caliber.

Step 10: Click Close, then OK, then Apply.
Now you are ready to convert your drm-free ebooks to pdf!
Adding your books to Calibre
Before converting your ebooks to pdf, you will need to add them to caliber. just click add books at the top left of the menu, then select the books from your downloads folder or where you stored them after downloading from amazon earlier.
Converting your e-books to PDF
Now that you’ve installed the drm removal plugin, the actual conversion of an ebook to pdf is easy as caliber takes care of everything for you. here’s how to convert your book.
Step 1: Click on the book in your list that you’d like to convert to make sure it’s highlighted.
step 2: click convert books in caliber’s top menu. you can also right-click a book and select convert books, then choose to convert individually or convert as a block.
Step 3: In the pop-up window, make sure “azw3” is displayed as the input format at the top left. at the top right, where it says output format, select pdf from the dropdown menu.
Step 4: It is also possible to adjust the output settings, such as line height, font size, etc., but we recommend converting the book first to see how it looks; you can always convert back later if you need to adjust any settings. most books are fine with the default settings.
step 5: check that the title and author on the right side of your screen are correct.
Step 6: Click OK at the bottom of the screen and the conversion will begin.
Step 7: Once finished, the job counter at the bottom right will return to zero.
Step 8: When you highlight the book in your list, to the right of your screen under Formats, you should now see a blue link that says “pdf”.
step 9: click here to open your book in pdf format.
Step 10: By default, caliber stores eBooks in the caliber library folder on your hard drive.
Step 11: If you want to send the book to yourself (by email, for example) to read on other devices, you can select click to open on the right side of your screen in caliber , under formats. this will display all the files associated with that book, including the cover, on your hard drive.
remember that you should never share a drm-free ebook with another person, as this is an infringement of copyright law.
