this is the third book in ivan doig’s montana series. Ivan is extremely good at storytelling. you can tell this by looking at the first level dialogue and plot. ride with me is an extremely important work in American fiction. this novel is about character, family along with the land they inhabit and farm. It’s also about how everyone is affected by Europeans residing in Northern Montana. this book is quite moving in a quite natural and profound way. All the characters in this book including the minor actors along with the memories make this book a once in a lifetime experience.

This book is not affected by the fact that doig earned his Ph.D. in American history and also served as a journalist who used to publish poems. everything described in the book feels good. The author does an excellent job of explaining complex thoughts, actions, and emotions with a deep understanding of the subject matter and love of language without being pompous or corny. At the time he was writing this book, Jick had just turned 65 and had just been widowed. however, jick is not a lost soul. he is still reevaluating his perspectives and roles in life. Accompanied by his daughter and his ex-husband, they embark on a long journey up and down, to and from the mountains. the three intersect as all families do, however this is not an opera. in fact, this book is about the power of revelation and memory. With that said, this is truly old-fashioned and excellent work from a professional who has a deep understanding of North Montana.

whistling season

being a good writer, in this book ivan tells the story of a widower who lives with three children on a dry farm in rural montana. he notices an ad posted by a woman who lives back east and is looking for a cleaning job. The woman is also more than willing to move to Montana. the advertisement clearly states that the woman does not know how to cook and does not bite. Eventually, Rose moves to Montana to serve as a housekeeper for millions. she also brings her brother with her. this is an extremely good set for what would later become a series of predictable scenarios for a less experienced writer.

However, the author does an excellent job. the season of whistles is a nod to the simplicity of the past. The author does an excellent job of painting the beautiful mountain landscapes. this is a lovely story about imperfect people.
