john dickson carr was an american author. he was born on November 30, 1906 and died on February 27, 1977 at the age of 70. he wrote in the mystery, whodunit, murder, and historical mystery genres. John D Carr is considered to be one of the greatest mystery writers of the Golden Age; complex plot-driven narratives in which the puzzle is paramount. John D Carr was influenced by the works of Gaston Leroux and the works of G. k. chesterton especially the brown father stories. John D. Carr has mastered the art of the locked room mystery in which an investigator unravels and solves seemingly impossible crimes. his mater piece is considered to be dr. fall the hallow man, which was selected in 1981 as the best locked room mystery of all time by a panel of 17 critics and writers. He also used the pseudonyms Roger Fairbairn, Carr Dickson, and Carter Dickson. John Dickson Carr was the son of Wooda Nicholas Carr, who was a US Congressman from Pennsylvania. John attended the Hill School in Pottstown and Haveford College. In the 1930s he moved to England where he married an English woman and began his writing career. He returned to the United States in 1948 and was already an internationally famous author. In 1950, John Carr’s biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle earned him the first of his two Special Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. in 1970 he won the second prize in recognition of his long career of more than 40 years as a mystery writer.
Several of John Dickson Carr’s works were made into films, including The Man in a Cloak, Dangerous Crossing, The Emperor’s Snuffbox, That Woman Across, The Chambre Ardente, and The Burning Court. Several of his works were adapted for television, including General Motors shows. The television series Colonel March of Scotland was based on his stories. John Dickson Carr also wrote many radio scripts, notably for the thriller radio anthology series in the US and for the UK equivalent ‘Date with Fear’ and also many other BBC dramas. he also wrote scripts. In America, his B13 half-hour radio booth was expanded into a series on CBS from 1948 to 1949 and Carr wrote 25 scripts. this radio play was also expanded into the script for the 1953 film Dangerous Crossing. In the 1940s, John Carr presented expert murders broadcast on mutual radio and featured works by other mystery authors who appeared as weekly guest writers.

The Plague Court Murders is the first book in the Sir Merrivale series. Once Dean Halliday became convinced that the malevolent ghost of Lois Playge was haunting his family’s London estate, she invited Detective Inspector Masters and Ken Bates to investigate. They went at night to find his aunt and fiancée preparing to exorcise the spirit at a seance led by a psychic named Roger Darworth. Roger Darworth locked himself in a stone house behind the Plague Court while the seance proceeded, and was found brutally murdered. the main question is who or what could have murdered him? all the doors and windows were locked and no one could have entered. The only person who can unravel and solve such a bizarre crime is locked room expert Sir Henry Merrivale. The book begins with two ex-espionage agents, Blake and a colleague, discussing their boss, the old married couple, who likes to sit with their feet up on the desk in the war office. old marrivale wants the story of the plague court murders to be written, but no one has gotten around to it. they think that the old marrivale wants history to be written simply for glory, since with the war over, he doesn’t have much glory. The Old Marrivale Department had ceased to be called the Counter-Intelligence Service and was now known simply as the Military Intelligence Department, or MID. Blake remembers his connection to the case that began on the night of September 6, 1930. It was a rainy night and Dean Halliday walked into the smoking room of the Noughts and Cross club and told him a disturbing story. Blake believes him only because they were friends and they knew he was mature and trustworthy.

No one expected the daughter of an East Roystead clergyman to write a scandalous bestseller, and when Monica Stanton published Wish, Albion Films quickly hired her. She had hoped that she would be adapting her work, but instead she was assigned to help screenwriter William Cartwright adapt his latest detective novel. Almost immediately, she begins a series of mysterious attempts on Monica’s life and the flamboyant Sir Henry Marrivale is invited to investigate. Will the cunning Mr. Marrivale be able to unravel the mystery, see through the intrigue, and stop the perpetrator before it’s too late? the book opens in the office of mr. Thomas Hackett at the Albion Films Studios. Monica has been invited there, and she figures that she has to do with turning her wish book into a movie. she had decided not to be impressed by the albion movie studios, but now that she was actually in mr. her in the hacketts office she can feel her heart racing and her speech a bit slurred. she makes him upset her. the albion study was much better than she expected and at the same time she is somewhat surprised and bewildered by the man sitting across the desk. Mr. Hackett is like the hero of his book: calm, dry and masterful. he points to a chair and with a precise and masterful gesture takes a box of cigarettes from his desk and offers them to her. then, coming to his senses, he quickly returns the box to the desk and slams the drawer shut. Mr. hackett works for mr. marshlake who was the head of albion movies and puts up the money. however, he was rarely seen. Mr. Hackett is about 35 years old, short, stocky, and dark-skinned. he and monica get into an argument and in the end moinca is hired to write the script. Mr. hacket is a worried man was a worried man. he is amazed to meet moinca stanton, in the flesh and to have reviewed his book, desire, he is not sure how much of it had gone through censorship.
