in julie mulhern’s “clouds in my coffee,” ellison is not in a very good place as he has to entertain several family members who have come to town unannounced. first it’s her sister, then her aunt, who comes to town for an impromptu party thrown by her mother, who calls herself the queen bee. At an event staged before the big party, Ellison comes very close to being killed by a falling half-statue and is only saved when a sycophantic admirer of his married sister pushes him out of the way. But that was not the only serious mishap of the day, since shortly after there was an episode of poisoning, shots and an incendiary bomb, which put everyone on high alert. ellison has always been good to everyone and he can’t think of anyone he would love to kill her or the reason for such a vendetta. she thinks he may not have been the target, but then who could be behind the killer if not her? the novel has the same perfect take on 1970s fun as the first two in the country club murder series.
