every once in a while, you usually get those books that are extremely hard to put down. Mistress of Rome is certainly one of those books. The author begins this book by first introducing the reader to a young slave girl from Judea named Thea. She was purchased from an extremely wealthy heiress, by the name of Lepida Pollia. this story is based on the rivalry that occurs between these two characters throughout the book. The boom begins when Lepida, only fourteen years old, decides to take a shine from the revered gladiator, the Barbarian. the only problem is that the gladiator has his eyes on thea and thea has his eyes on him. Lepida is furious and decides to sell Thea into slavery.

thea eventually ends up working with a brother before finally catching up with a great and loving teacher who helps her further her career and passion as a singer, while also protecting her son in the process. However, according to Thea, now Athena, she believes that she will never find peace. She later comes to the attention of Emperor Domitian, who is more than determined to ensure that Thea becomes his plaything. since he is the emperor, what she normally wants, she normally gets. however, unknown to many people, Emperor Domitian has an extremely dark side; therefore, he enjoys driving athens to the brink of madness. the time the two share is a struggle primarily on Athena’s side.

kate quinn takes readers to the limits of an imaginary world that has been trapped in the evil of the emperor. there are also backstabbings, intrigues and murders. there are numerous characters in this book, most of them are difficult to follow in their personal lives. This novel has been written in both first person and third person. one of the best characters in this book is thea. she is not only strong, but she is also passionate, loyal and strong. The most colorful character is Lepida, although she is also scheming and evil. The hatred between Thea and Lepida ignites in many ways, especially considering the fact that she influenced how these characters’ lives ended.

That said, kaate quinn has managed to create an extremely rich and powerful world in this book. she writes in a descriptive and vivid way, especially when she portrays gladiator fights, you may end up thinking you are in the thick of things. the descriptions of the jewelry, clothing, and its residents have also been well crafted. Quinn has managed to include both fact and fiction in the story.

the daughters of rome is also another excellent read in the empress of rome series of books. the book has been set in the year of the four emperors. Even though there are other novels, which have been set after the rise of the Flavian dynasty, for the first time, Quinn’s novel is the first book to see things from the perspective of the four patrician women. To help readers keep everything in order, the author decided to give three of these patrician women nicknames. As the novel begins, we meet the main characters during Lollia’s wedding ceremony. To promote her grandfather’s business interests, Lollia has managed to endure a series of marriages. this wedding ceremony is her fourth and this time she is getting married to someone known as the limp old man.

Later in the book, we learn that Lollia was at one point married to Vespasian’s eldest son, with whom she has a daughter. According to the story, Lollia’s real name is Marcia Furnilla. Ella Quinn Ella has also done an excellent job of describing all the excesses of any Roman wedding. As the celebration continues, we learn that Diana, whose father is an extremely famous sculptor, is a free-spirited young woman who is totally obsessed with chariot racing. Marcella, on the other hand, is married to a greedy and uninspiring senator who calls himself Lucius, who currently serves in the military observer’s seat.

so, marcella is forced to live with her brother gaius and social climbing, tulia. we also learn that Serbian has also been declared emperor by the senate. We also learn that Cornelia is married to a young aristocrat named Lucius Piso, who will be named Gabba’s successor. We can also meet the captivating Marcus Otho. Toward the end, a bloody coup finally turns the world they live in upside down, and Marcella and Cornelia, along with her cousins, must be able to maneuver carefully to stay alive. As Cornelia recovers as she tries to pick up the pieces, Marcella finds a hidden talent for influencing some of the most powerful men in Rome. towards the end of the book it becomes apparent that they can only be an emperor and an empress as well. That said, this book is a wonderful mix of characters that have been well developed.
