Favorite Kwanzaa Read Alouds – Elementary Nest

Last month, I put together great read-alouds for Thanksgiving and Christmas. i also wanted to include some read alouds for kwanzaa and hanukkah. I covered the hanukkah read aloud in last week’s activity blog. And now, it’s time to speak out loud about the great Kwanzaa reading.

This holiday focuses on unity, heritage and community. begins on December 26 and lasts seven days. These six books below highlight and display these principles. here is my favorite kwanzaa read aloud for the classroom!

li’l rabbit’s kwanzaa by donna l. Washington

synopsis: the little rabbit was upset because he was the smallest rabbit in the family. he felt that he was not really experiencing all the fun parts of kwanzaa with his family. So when his grandmother gets sick during kwanzaa, the little rabbit comes up with a plan to truly enjoy the holiday. he begins to gather helpers to prepare a present for his grandmother. Also, the back of the book has a short informative list of the seven principles of kwanzaa.

synopsis: the story centers on a girl named kayla, sad that her brother khari would not be home for kwanzaa due to snow. first, the story goes through different celebrations that kayla has with her family, while she misses her brother khari de ella. While telling the story, the reader gets a rich description of the different celebrations and traditions that occur during Kwanzaa. At the end, as her family reunites, Kayla is surprised by a visit from a special relative.

synopsis: This story goes through short chapters explaining a young boy’s kwanzaa journey with his family. first, it starts with getting ready for kwanzaa in chapter one, then, he learns about candles in chapter 2, and finally ends with the little boy lighting the candles on his own. Throughout the story, the reader learns the facts and traditions of Kwanzaa in an easy to understand way.

kwanzaa by lisa j. amstutz

synopsis: this is a nice short informative text about kwanzaa. in particular, it is written in easy language and sentences for beginning readers. Similar to the other books, the reader will learn about the basic traditions during the festivities, such as lighting kinara, making mats, and more.

synopsis: this story is told in the first person. the girl’s story of her journey through the days of kwanzaa teaches about the principles and traditions that kwanzaa has. she goes through each of the seven principles, describing them, and what’s more, the book even teaches readers how to pronounce each word. in conclusion, they end kwanzaa together, with a big party and celebration.

synopsis: Here is another informational text for students to read. however, it is for more advanced readers than the nonfiction text I showed above. the text includes different themes such as the history of the holiday, plus it also includes many brilliant text features that add great detail to the text.
