lee smith is an american author of southern gothic fiction. She was born on November 1, 1944, in Grundy, Virginia. She grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia, a frequent setting for many of her novels that feature characters living in the southern states or parts of the Appalachian Mountains.
When I was nine years old, I was already writing and selling stories for five cents each. the stories would be about her neighbors in his hometown and the “shouts” nearby. She has published several novels since 1968 and has also published three collections of his short stories and has won several writing awards.

has a sense of place that reveals empathy and understanding of Appalachian culture and people. His birth in the small coal mining town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Kentucky border informs many of his novels. The town was barely ten miles from the Kentucky border and her house was on the main street with the Levisa River running behind it.
Her mother had come to Grundy to teach school and her father was a native of the area who operated a penny store. She began observing the shoppers in that store and paying attention to how they spoke, dressed, and said, which gave her early training as a writer.
smith would pick up these details through a peephole secretly placed in the ceiling of the store so shoppers would never have a clue. Smith captured these tales in his nonfiction novel Dimestore: A Writer’s Life. it was released in 2016.

says he didn’t know any writers growing up, but he grew up around people talking and telling their story. she says that her uncle vern de ella was a famous storyteller and was in the legislature. her father was also a good storyteller and her mother could create a story out of anything, even a trip to the grocery store. she describes the storytelling as “very local.”

first became a published author with the release of her book black mountain breakdown, the story of a popular girl at school that follows her through her life. It was released in 1980. Smith has won the o. Henry, the North Carolina Literature Prize and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Prize for Fiction.
lee smith followed the release of her first fiction novel with another three years later titled oral history. She then wrote several more novels that ended up being published: family clothes, beautiful and tender ladies, the devil’s dream and five more.
black mountain breakdown is the story of the main character crystal spangler. She is a young woman who lives in rural Appalachia. the crystal is the center of her mother’s world. Although the crystal is not extraordinarily beautiful, her mother knows that she will soon be.
Meanwhile, Crystal goes to Black Rock High. she is the most popular girl there. she is part of the cheerleading squad and always manages to get good grades. she’s also not surprised when she’s elected a beauty queen. but crystal discovers god and her whole perspective changes and she becomes more religious.

From there, crystal goes off to college. she even falls in love while she is there. but when she gets home, she is confused and looks disheveled. her later on, she becomes the wife of a rich politician, so it seems that she is doing quite well.

Oral History is the second fictional novel written by Lee Smith. The main character of this novel is Jennifer. she is a student currently studying at the university. But when she returns home as a child, hooting, owl, there is much to record on the little recorder she brings with her. She be careful what she wishes for when she is trying to find out her family history.
the cantrell family has lived in the mountains of virginia for a long time. the family is known for going to extremes and they seem to do everything with all their might. they play hard, they love hard, and when something goes wrong, they are devastated. they’re not the type to keep a stiff upper lip.
This story focuses on the history of the cantrells. this doomed family is covered by approximately four generations. maybe they’re just having a run of bad luck, but there’s something dark about the mountains. Still, the family won’t give up as Jennifer is told stories of blood ties, murder, suicide, incest, and more.
The book covers the course of a hundred years when it does not focus on Jennifer, who is determined to learn more about history and her family tree through stories. This story is set in a fictional part of Appalachia, but that doesn’t stop it from being culturally resonant and true to the area in some ways. The novel begins with Almarine Cantrell’s encounter with a witch and continues through her grandchildren as well.
