so without further ado, the basics of keeping a log book in the united states of america.

you have to drive and work within 14 hours.

You are allowed to drive a maximum of eleven hours and must have a break of 10 consecutive hours in the United States of America.

also, during your workday from the last off-duty bunk period of your 10 consecutive hours, you must have a half-hour break at the eight-hour mark.

so, for example, if you arrive at work at eight in the morning, you should take a break at or before four in the afternoon.

so we’ll give you more details about the cdl logbooks.

stay, we’ll be back with that information soon.

[opening credits & music]

hello smart drivers, rick with the smart driving test talking to you today about the basic rules for keeping a log book in the united states this is for cdl drivers: commercial drivers operating a truck or bus in the states United States of America.

As an American or Canadian driver operating in the United States across the border.

you need to know the american rules because the hours you can drive are less than in canada and the downtime – consecutive downtime is more than in the united states.

You have to have your working day within a margin of 14 hours.

not that kind of window!

a 14-hour window: From the time you start in the morning to the time you take your 10 consecutive hours off duty, it must be 14 hours.

so if you start at eight in the morning, you have to finish by ten at night.

You can’t drive after ten at night.

You can work after that, but you can’t drive.

so your 14 hour window has to be your 11 hour drive time.

You are allowed a maximum of eleven hours of driving time in the United States of America and at the eight hour mark, from your last free time you must take a 30 minute break.

so, for example, if you start driving at eight in the morning, you should take a 30-minute break at or before four in the afternoon. In addition, you must have 10 consecutive hours. out of order.

so, for example, if you’re off duty at 8 p.m., you can’t drive again until 6 a.m. the next morning.

you have to take 10 consecutive hours off.

And if you use bunk beds to sleep in, you can do 70 hours in eight days in the US.

that’s your duty cycle.

Now, the two lines in your logbook that make up the duty cycle are lines 3 and 4, which are your driving time and you’re on duty, not driving, so know your duty cycle.

also, if you have a daytime taxi in the united states, most of the time the company will not operate 24/7, and if the company does not operate 24 hours a day, the 7 days a week, you will be working 60 hours in seven days.

those are the basic rules for the registry book in the united states of america.

and make sure you know the basic rules before you start applying exemptions, those other rules that apply to log books in the united states.

because there are some exemptions and there are some differences between map miles and air miles and I’d like to get the logbook basics under your belt before you start applying those exemptions.

also, if you keep an electronic logbook, as you probably do today.

because most businesses are unlikely to use paper records.

It’s too much work for the administration.

so they are running electronic records and also know to keep supporting documentation.

if you’re drawn to the weight scale and dot (department of transportation, the cvse (commercial vehicle safety and enforcement), mto ministry of transportation) in ontario and other jurisdictions, whatever the diesel engine , as we call it in the trucking industry, will be looking for supporting documentation to support what you’ve written on your log sheet, whether it’s an electronic log sheet or a paper log sheet.

so, for example, if you received fuel at ten in the morning, that fuel receipt has a date and time stamp.

and that date and time stamp on your fuel receipt has to match your logbook as well.

so make sure you’re on duty not driving the line and putting fuel in the truck and that’s the entry you put in your log book at ten o’clock in the morning if you have a fuel receipt that has that on it too.

so if you’re running logbooks, make sure the supporting documentation lines up with what’s in your logbook and lines up exactly.

and on that note i had a cvse officer here in british columbia province say he also liked to see receipts for coffee cups i mean you don’t have to give it to diesel bears but it does support that your logbook is, in fact, the real thing and you filled it out to the best of your ability.

because it’s a legal document and if there’s a lockout, they’ll use their logbook to investigate that lockout.

so make sure you complete it to the best of your ability.

Also, if you apply for a company that doesn’t operate 24/7, you can only run 60 hours in 7 days.

and even if you work for a company that actually operates 24/7, you can operate 70 hours in eight days.

and also, you have to deliver your blog in the united states to your company every 13 days.

Now just on that note of turning in the sign-in sheet, most companies, just for logistics and getting paid and accounting and stuff like that, they want you to turn in your paperwork at the end of each trip.

so you’ll do that, especially for the bigger companies that get paid, and you get paid and you know the cash flow and all that.

so legally, you have to turn in your log sheets to the company every 13 days.

Also, for whatever cycle you are operating, you must have that registration sheet number in the vehicle with you.

so if you are running 60 hours and seven days you should have seven days of log sheets on the truck with you or on the bus and if you are running 70 hours in eight days you should have eight days. registration sheet in the vehicle.

Most log sheets, if you’re running a paper log sheet, they’re a booklet and they come with 31 days.

so most drivers keep the month.

but most of you, as I said before, will be using an electronic log book, so you will have the required number of days with you in the vehicle.

You just need to keep supporting documentation for the current trip you’re on; You do not need to have supporting documentation from previous trips.

supporting documentation: if they want that for previous trips, the authorities will go back to the company and request it from the company.

so those are the basic rules in the united states.

quick review of the basic rules of the logbook in the united states of america.

You are allowed to drive a maximum of eleven hours in your 14-hour window.

so your workday has to occur within a 14-hour window.

so therefore, if you start work at eight in the morning, you can’t drive after ten at night.

and don’t tell you, you probably don’t want to drive anyway because you’re going to be pretty beat up.

Also, after going on duty, after eight hours of work, you must take a break from your last duty cycle.

so if you start work at eight in the morning, you should take a 30-minute break at or before four in the afternoon.

in addition, you must have 10 consecutive hours out of service between duty cycles.

so you have one work period, 10 consecutive hours off duty, another worker ten consecutive hours off duty, and so on.

There are two duty cycles in the United States of America and line 3 on line 4-driving and shift, not driving make up the number of hours that calculate your duty cycle r.

so the two work cycles are 60 hours in seven days which is a business that doesn’t operate 24/7 which is not likely but 60 hours in seven days if you have a daytime taxi.

and the other work cycle is 70 hours in eight days and the company works 24/7.

And most of the time, I’ll just tell you this, drivers get into trouble because they violate the duty cycle.

so keep track of that, and there’s another video here on the channel – watch it and find out how to calculate your duty cycle if you’re not using an electronic log.

and if you are using paper log sheets, you must also submit the log sheets at least every 13 days to your company.

Most companies will want these given to them after each trip just for accounting and payment purposes and that sort of thing.

and lastly, you should only keep in the vehicle the supporting documentation of the trip in progress.

If they want the supporting documentation, they will go to your company to get it.
