This first book gives insight into the life of Maisie Dobbs and her journey to becoming a detective. Dobbs started working very young when she became a servant at Belgravia Manor at the age of 13. After being found reading in her employer’s library, Lady Rowen plans to send her to college. there are lines in the book that highlight her hunger for education and her love of books. however, while lady rowden wants to send her to university, this plan is thwarted by the first world war and years later, in 1929, she finds herself starting her detective agency. The book revolves around herself and her first case of hers as an investigator.

The second book in the Dobbs series came out in 2004 and now it’s been a full year since Maisie Dobbs started her one-woman agency. she is now more mature, more experienced and definitely more successful. She has moved into a professional location on Fitzroy Square. The year is 1930 and Dobbs no longer works alone. she now she has a lively help named billy beale. She has achieved success in her field, which is evident in winning over Detective Inspector Stratton of the Scotland Yard Murder Squad. Dobbs has come a long way from her early days as a servant and later as a nurse. In the spring of 1930, Maisie Dobbs is asked to work on the fugitive heiress case while Stratton works on a murder case. The heiress was enviably rich and spoiled, but she always remained in the domineering shadow of her father, who refused to give her the freedom she deserved from her. as a sign of rebellion against her father, the heiress flees. Dobbs is asked to find the girl and bring her back when Maisie realizes that her case is closely related to the one Stratton has been working on. And all of this is tied to the great war that Dobbs had tried so hard to forget.

maisie dobbs still earns great respect among her readers for her integrity and strength of character. she is not willing to do anything illegal to earn money and that gives her an advantage over other similar characters. people have enjoyed the series so much that it will soon become a bbc tv series.
what makes dobbs’s character stand out is the fact that he is a product of world war i and the depression era. these facts give him a new dimension as he constantly connects his present with his past and tries to discover how a nation would recover from such a trauma.
another reason dobbs’s character becomes believable is due to the fact that it was precisely in those days of trauma and stress that many women entered unconventional fields. it happened because the government wanted more men fighting on the battlefield than working in factories, and therefore women took over various unconventional careers, including construction and law enforcement. seeing dobbs become a detective in those times is not too far from the truth or reality because it was in fact happening in those desperate times.
maisie dobbs is a believable character with her flaws and strengths. she may seem too good to a modern reader, but if she is seen in the context of the time she was born in, her character seems very plausible. Therefore, this series should be enjoyed as a period novel to better understand Dobbs’ character. Dobbs’s series has consistently garnered audiences in both the UK and the US. in the US, although these books are not as widely available in the US. uu. as in Europe due to the origin of the author.
