makeup books face paint

1. face painting – history of makeup

by lisa eldridge

This is an absolutely beautiful makeup book and one of the best out there, with easy to read subtitles and text blocks that you can flip through. I consider it a classic in the world of makeup.

in face painting, lancome global creative director and makeup artist lisa eldridge shares the entire history of makeup, from the egyptian and classical era to the golden age of hollywood. but it goes beyond history. The brilliant photos in this full-color book are a joy to behold! In it, she’ll see how people have used makeup throughout history to add glamor to their lives and read all about the appeal of beauty icons like Twiggy.

This is not a how-to book, but it definitely shares some essential lessons. lisa brings a different perspective for those who might be tempted to see makeup and fashion as “superficial” topics. This book shows us how rich and wonderful the world of cosmetics really is!

by gabriela hernandez

classic beauty is a bit more comprehensive than face painting and I find it a great reference book. shows how history has shaped accepted beauty patterns and rituals and the changes in cosmetics over the years. I don’t know about you, but I find that sort of thing so fascinating!

I love the fact that the book is packed with images that illustrate the evolution of makeup and beauty from the 1920s to today. This book is not just for makeup artists and educators, but would really be interesting for any makeup enthusiast. plus, it looks great on a coffee table!

makeup books color theory for makeup artists

5. color theory for makeup artists

by katie middleton

Color Theory for Makeup Artists is a must-read reference book for aspiring professional makeup artists! I firmly believe that a basic understanding of color theory is absolutely necessary even for a daily makeup application. Check out my interview with Terri Tomlinson on a basic overview of color theory and makeup (for non-professionals), it’s a great starting point for anyone looking to dive into color theory + makeup. of course, I include a chapter on color theory (for pure beginners) in my book (scroll down, it’s on the list!).

In kattie middleton’s book, she helps professionals and beginners alike train their eyes to understand and recognize color differences. Since everyone has different skin tones and undertones, understanding how color theory applies to makeup can help you up your game.

Learn how to blend skin tones using only primary colors, discover the reason for variations in skin colors and undertones, and identify flattering shades for eyes, lips, and cheeks for all skin tones. I really feel that anyone who wants to learn more about color theory and how it affects the quality of their makeup should have this book.

6. skincare: the ultimate no-nonsense guide

by caroline hirons

Not only is this long-awaited book a #1 bestseller on Amazon, it’s often referred to as the new skincare bible. Skincare: The Ultimate No-Nonsense Guide is a holy grail book from skincare authority Caroline Hirons. In it, he reviews skincare routines, shows recommended routines with step-by-step photos, reviews common skin conditions, recommendations, and debunks the many myths we’ve all come to believe about skincare. /p>

I recommend this book because the information in it is very good, but the aesthetic of this book is also really unique. the pages are so fluid, the content is extremely easy to read… it really is in a class of its own.

no pressure, but you should definitely get this book. after all, beautiful makeup is even more beautiful on fantastic skin!

7. make up your mind: express yourself

by François Nars

No makeup book collection is complete without this book. I guarantee you’ll be drawn to the beautiful cover first (it sure was), but it goes way beyond the cool visuals. It’s full of inspiration and amazing ideas for different makeup looks and styles!

The book starts with some quick little tips on the eyes, face and skin, which I found very helpful. but, it is not a manual that teaches makeup to people who are true beginners. there are steps to recreate looks for those who already know how to use makeup brushes and palettes, but it’s definitely designed for people who already know the basics and want to learn new techniques and get inspiration for new applications.

Another thing I love about this book is the variety of models. there are more African American, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Asian women included. I always say that all skin colors of all genders should be celebrated, and Nars seems to agree! check out this post on the most inclusive makeup brands >

makeup books bobbi brown makeup manual

8. bobbi brown makeup manual: for everyone from beginners to professionals

by bobbi brown

no makeup book list would be complete without a bobbi brown book. The Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual is another staple. While yes, some of the information in it is a bit dated, I still consider it one of the best makeup reference books out there. In it, Bobbi Brown compiles her 25+ years of makeup styling experience into a comprehensive (and beautiful) bible.

this book covers everything from nutrition and how it affects your skin, to the correct application of concealer. covers the basics of skin care and all aspects of makeup application, from finding the right color and type of foundation to applying eye makeup perfectly to suit your eye color and shape.

If you are looking for a book that works for beginners and more experienced makeup lovers, this is the one. it has everything you need to know and offers images and step-by-step instructions. She guides you through the steps of putting blush on your cheeks, applying foundation, lipstick, eye makeup (from Asian eyes to smokey eyes), and many other steps.

If you’re a makeup student, I think this is one of the absolute must-have makeup books to invest in. it’s really helpful and detailed, and includes everything you’ll need and more!

makeup books making faces

9. making faces

by kevin aucoin

This is another essential book in my opinion. Kevyn Aucoin, America’s preeminent makeup artist in the 1990s, shares his insider tips on the basics of makeup application and technique, and how to use foundations to create a wide range of different looks.

the how to make faces book includes 200 (!!!) color photos and sketches, mostly drawn by kevyn, to illustrate how to apply makeup. is an excellent choice for people with a passion for the industry and/or people with intermediate to advanced makeup skills.

aucoin also provides a great introduction at the beginning of the book that focuses on tools, face shapes, etc. it is full of interesting information! Kevyn’s tips and techniques are timeless and accessible. If you are going to be a makeup artist, this is your book. I think if you can practice and master the looks he teaches you, you’ll be able to handle just about anything the industry throws at you.

10. be your own makeup artist: unleash your inner beauty

yours sincerely, natalie setareh

Last but not least, this is my favorite makeup book of all time: be your own makeup artist. I am so proud to have written and published this book, and so honored that it has made it into the cosmetology school curriculum.

But this book tries much more than choosing adequate makeup and learning to use it. It is a complete makeup guide for beginners in makeup, created for all, neutral in terms of gender and takes into account all skin tones. In addition, be your own makeup artist is full of beautiful images and sketches to help you understand everything, even if you are a true beginner.

What makes being your own makeup artist different from the rest?

I really wanted to create a no-nonsense makeup book written for non-beauty professionals in the 21st century. Be Your Own Makeup Artist is for everyone who wants to learn how to shop for makeup and understand the what, where, why, and how behind their perfect makeup application (not one size fits all). look).

This book is for the person who wants to look as fantastic as they feel. You will learn to approach makeup as an option and a means of expression, not as a necessity. there is no fancy vocabulary or industry jargon to decipher. everything is simple and easy, just as it should be!

1- is not funded or endorsed by beauty brands…

It’s worth mentioning that all of the recommendations I make in the book are based on my real-life experience as a makeup artist and beauty coach. There are no sponsorships, affiliate links, or kickbacks in this book because I think there is enough of that to read. You don’t need any more “experts” telling you what to buy just so they can earn a commission. I want to discover the products and techniques that really work for you.

3- no “models” or heavy retouching…

I wanted to use ordinary people in my book and made sure the photographer didn’t retouch too much. you need to see what the makeup looks like in real life, which is easier said than done.
