Martha Wells is the best-selling American author of fantasy, science fiction, and science fiction fantasy novels. She was born in Texas in the United States. Wells became a published novelist in 1993 after her first novel, The Element of Fire, the debut novel in the Ile-Rien series, was published. Since then, Wells has published more than five book series, three stand-alone novels, collections, and has contributed to writing Stargate Atlantis and short stories such as Bad Medicine (1997) and Reliquary (1995). The second novel in the Ile-rien series, Death of the Necromancer was nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Novel. graduated wells with a b.a. bachelor’s degree in anthropology; she resides in college station, texas with her loving husband.

the paths of the clouds is the debut novel in the raksura series books. The story features Moon as a shapeshifter, but the problem is that he doesn’t know what he is. he transforms into a dragon like creature with claws, wings, and black scales. his family was killed when he was a little boy and he is the only survivor of his family. his mother, his sister and three of his brothers died and since his death (thirty-five) years / shifts, he never found out what he was and had to adapt alone to this scary and mysterious world.
all the years he had been alone, moon lived in the “darkness” with earthlings trying to make a home for himself. however, he knew very well that his hiding place would never last forever and that every time he was discovered, he would be expelled and nearly killed. surprisingly, this would happen when the earthlings saw the other shapeshifter form of him; this is because his black-scaled humanoid body when he transforms closely resembles the deadliest predators on his planet: the Fallen. however, despite all the clues, moon understands well that he is not one of the fallen (dangerous predators), but explaining this to the fools of earth would be another story entirely. He is used to getting kicked and enduring the worst treatment, but now he can’t stand loneliness anymore and that’s why he decides to look for company at all costs.

In the village of Cordons, the last settlement where he resided for a long time, rumors began to circulate of seeing fallen creatures in the area. once the stories start to spread, the woman he was in a relationship with finds out. Unaware that his cover has been compromised, he doesn’t notice anything amiss until the villagers drug him with a poison that paralyzes the Fallen, rendering him unable to change and trapping him in something between the two forms. the. they tie it up, leaving it alone for other predators to tear it apart and eat it).
However, like the others, the wild beasts are ready to make a meal of the moon, the rumored predator, “fell”, kills the animal and disappears with the moon. Shocked and beside himself, possibly because he is more likely to be eaten by this monster three times his size, Moon is uncooperative. However, what Moon discovers later sends him on an epic adventure that will have him questioning everything he ever believed.
The debut novel is a primal fantasy set in a world where there is no earth like humans and the only creatures that closely resemble humans are earthlings. there are about a dozen terrestrial species and very few of them resemble human beings. Raksura shapeshifters are the closest thing to a human being. this book is a grand fantasy with settings including consorts, queens, courts, rulers and a servant, flying ships, flying islands, unique flora and fauna, flying ships, in other words this is a world, different from planet earth. what makes the story unique is the fact that it features reversed gender roles.
The female characters in the story are strong, keep the peace, and are a terror in the sky. Some warriors form a strong security force when they are together. there are different races, cultures and this is explained in several stages which makes it totally believable. the story is told only from the third person perspective.

wells has done a brilliant job when it comes to characterization. all the characters in it are unique and bond with the readers, a factor that makes this novel interesting. there is the moon, the shapeshifter who knows nothing about his race and family. at first he is fearful, rogue lonely, curious, cautious and also careful due to his experiences in the past. then there is the stone, a member of the indigo cloud court. he is patient, kind but also a fierce warrior. Other characters you’ll encounter in the story include Tinkerbell, Jade, and Pearl who mesh well in this narrative and contribute to the overall story construction.

Once a lonely wanderer, Moon has become the lifelong companion of Jade, one of the sister queens of the Indigo Cloud Court. now, the two travel together with their people on flying ships in hopes of finding a new colony to call home. At last, Moon feels that he has found a tribe and a family that he belongs to.
However, when they arrive at their ancestral home of indigo cloud wrapped in the trunk of a huge tree, the size of a mountain; they discover that the pest is infecting the core of the tree. Just nearby, they discover the remains of invaders who could be responsible for the disease and also find evidence of a disastrous robbery. This shocking discovery sends the Moon-led Indigo Cloud Hunters on a journey to locate the Tree’s Heartstone, a journey that will take them to far-off new lands across the Sea of Serpents.
the second book of the raksura books is brilliant. Luna, the main character of this fantasy novel, still can’t fit in even though she has found a place in society and is happy with Jade. he is not happy with his social position as most of those around him still dislike him. jade protects the moon and cares a lot about him. He is happy that Moon accepted her courtship gifts and agreed to stay with her. All in all, Sea of Serpents is an impressive and excellent sequel to a brilliant series from a best-selling author.
