A slew of highly anticipated book-to-film adaptations are set to hit the big-screen in 2017. Several notable novel inspired projects, like the long-awaited The Dark Tower film and the upcoming It remake, are scheduled to hit theaters over the coming months. Can’t decide which ones are worth checking out? Here are 18 popular books being made into movies in 2017.

1. live at night, premiered on January 13

ben affleck writes, directs and stars in the upcoming crime thriller based on the 2012 novel of the same name by dennis lehane. Set in the 1920s and 1930s, the story follows Joe Coslin, the prodigal son of a Boston police captain. After moving to the Ybor City neighborhood of Tampa, Fla., he becomes a bootlegger and rum dealer, and later a notorious gangster.

Affleck will star as Cosslin, while Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Brendan Gleeson, Elle Fanning and Max Casella will co-star. the film is scheduled for a limited release on December 25, before a general release on January 13.

2. the purpose of a dog, released on January 27

based on the 2010 bestselling novel by w. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose centers on a devoted pup who finds meaning in his own existence through the lives of the humans he loves, teaching them to laugh and love. Directed by Lasse Hallström, the film co-stars Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton and Britt Robertson alongside K.J. apa, juliet rylance, luke kirby, john ortiz and pooch hall.

3. fifty shades darker, february 10

the sequel to 2015’s fifty shades of gray is based on e.l. James’s novel of the same name. Directed by James Foley, the upcoming erotic romantic drama follows Anastasia “Ana” Steele as she tries to get over her relationship with Christian Grey. But a wounded Christian convinces her to resume their romance on Ana’s terms. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan reprise their lead roles, while Kim Bassger, Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford, Eric Johnson and Bella Heathcote co-star.

4. the shack, March 3

The faith-based drama, based on the 2007 best-selling novel by William Paul Young, stars Samworthington as a father whose young daughter is kidnapped and is believed to have been killed during a family camping trip. Years later, he receives a note from “Papa,” which is his wife’s nickname for God, asking him to return to the shack where his daughter’s bloody clothes were found. there he experiences a spiritual epiphany. octavia spencer, graham greene and tim mcgraw co-stars.

5. the zookeeper’s wife, March 31

the war drama, based on the non-fiction book by diane ackerman, tells the true story of warsaw zookeepers jan and antonina Żabiński, who saved many human and animal lives during world war ii by hiding them in animal cages. Jessica Chastain, Johanheldenbergh, Michael McElhatton and Daniel Brühl star in the film, directed by Niki Caro.

6. before falling, April 7

Zoey Deutch will play Sam, a young woman who has it all, including good looks, lots of friends and a popular boyfriend. A day in her enchanted life begins like any other, until it turns out to be her last. Caught reliving her last day for an unexplained week, Sam unravels the mystery surrounding her death. Halston Sage, Kian Lawley, Logan Miller, Cynthy Wu, Elena Kampouris, Medalion Rahimi and Jennifer Beals round out the cast. ry russo-young directs the film, which is based on lauren oliver’s already bestselling novel.

7. the lost city of z, april 21

The upcoming chronological film tells the true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who made several attempts to find an ancient lost city in the Amazon, only to disappear along with his son during their search in 1952. Charlie Hunnam stars as Fawcett, while Robert Pattinson plays fellow explorer Henry Costin and Sienna Miller plays his wife, Nina Fawcett. James Gray directs the film, which is based on the 2009 book of the same name by David Grann.

8. the circle, april 28

Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel of the same name will serve as the basis for the upcoming sci-fi drama adaptation, starring Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Bill Paxton. The book centers on tech worker Mae Holland (Watson) as she joins a powerful internet company, which starts out as an incredibly rewarding experience, but soon begins to fall apart.

9. everything, everything, May 19

nicola yoon’s hit ya drama is coming to the big screen this year. the story follows two teenagers who fall in love and are determined to be together, despite the fact that one of them suffers from a rare disease that makes her allergic to almost everything. Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson will take on the two lead roles in the film adaptation. ana de la res guera, anika none rose and taylor hickson will complete the supporting cast.

10. my cousin rachel, july 14

Based on the 1951 novel of the same name, this upcoming drama will star Sam Claflin and Rachel Weisz as a man and his mysterious cousin, who may or may not be guilty of murdering another of his relatives. Roger Michell directs the film, which will co-star Iain Glen, Holliday Grainger, Andrew Knott and Poppy Lee Frair.

11. the dark tower, july 28

Based on a series of novels by Stephen King, the upcoming sci-fi western stars Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, an 11-year-old adventure seeker who follows clues to another dimension called Middle World. Once there, he meets frontiersman Roland Deschain (played by Idris Elba), who is on a mission to reach the Dark Tower in hopes of saving the dimension from extinction. On their quest, the duo must escape various monsters and a vicious sorcerer (Mathew McConaughey).

12. is, September 8

Adapted from Stephen King’s iconic 1986 novel, the upcoming horror drama tells the story of seven children terrorized by the eponymous clown, who exploits the fears and phobias of his victims. Bill Skarsgård stars as Pennywise the Clown, while Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard and Jack Dylan Grazer round out the cast. Andres Muschietti directs the feature film.

13. the mountain between us, October 20

The forthcoming romance-disaster film stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as surgeon Max Payne and writer Rachel Knox who both survive a plane crash, but are left stranded in the wilderness with injuries and harsh weather conditions. Hany Abu-Assad directs the film, which is based on Charles Martin’s novel of the same name.

14. red sparrow, november 10

Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is re-teaming with Jennifer Lawrence for his latest directorial effort, based on Jason Matthews’s novel of the same name. Set in modern-day Russia, the book follows a young woman who is drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service. When she’s assigned to operate against a CIA officer, the two agents get caught up in an atmosphere of deception and attraction that threatens their careers. Joel Egerton will star opposite Lawrence, while Jeremy Irons and Matthias Schoenaerts will round out the cast.

15. marvel, november 17

The upcoming drama, adapted from r.j. The 2012 Palace novel stars Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as the parents of Jacob Tremblay, who plays Auggie, a boy struggling to overcome a facial deformity. The film also features Mandy Patinkin, Sonia Braga, Millie Davis, Ali Liebert and Daveed Diggs. Stephen Chbosky directs the film.

16. murder on the orient express, november 22

Based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, this Kenneth Branagh-directed remake follows detective Poirot as he becomes stranded on the famous train during a terrible snowstorm. When a fellow passenger is murdered, Poirot discovers a great number of other passengers could be the culprit. Branagh will also star in the film as Poirot alongside a killer ensemble cast that includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, and Penelope Cruz.

17. let it snow, November 2017

Adapted from beloved short story collection penned by John Green (The Fault In Our Stars), Maureen Johnson (13 Little Blue Envelopes) and Lauren Myracle (Internet Girls series), Let It Snow will follow three unexpected romances that take place over the course of one Christmas Eve. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (The Spectacular Now) penned the most recent version of the screenplay, which was originally drafted by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect). Casting for the project is still underway, although Luke Snellin is already set to direct.

Based on David Finkel’s non-fiction book of the same name, this war drama chronicles the post-traumatic stress disorder that many soldiers face as they attempt to adjust to civilian life after returning to the United States from Iraq. The movie will feature a star-studded cast, including Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, and Amy Schumer. Jason Hall will make his directorial debut with the film, which is expected to hit theaters sometime later this year. An exact premiere date is still TBD.
