Famously known for her mysteries, Nancy Atherton, author of the ‘Aunt Dimity Series,’ is a highly successful writer today. defying the general perception of her as an ‘English woman’, she is, in fact, American and defines herself as seemingly out of the ordinary.
initial and personal efforts:
Growing up in Chicago, Nancy Atherton was the second of eight children (five brothers and three sisters) in her family. Her entire childhood was spent surrounded by public services such as schools, parks and transportation, which led her to experience various aspects of her life. she also jokingly claimed, much later in her life, that “her family’s tax payments were an excellent investment.” At the age of nine, she began her first trip with the pen and since then nothing has stopped her. her her initial words were restricted to letters she wrote to her cousin, as well as some of her stories. At that age, one short story in particular entitled “A Trip to the Moon” was her memorable first writing. but as a couple more years passed, she broadened her horizons and began to venture into more exciting fields like poetry and theater. it was then that she began to discover her passion for writing. her first publication occurred at the age of twelve when her school’s literary magazine called “windfall” decided to print three of her poems to be read throughout the district. but even the many years of writing for endless hours did not give him the idea of taking up writing as a profession until much later in her life. it was only in her adult years that she realized that writing as a career option really existed. when she was a child, she was an avid reader and she read almost anything she could get her hands on. from stories about animals to non-fiction pieces and plays, she reviewed them all. this led to a personal statement from her, later in an interview for omnimysterynews, where she attributed her diverse writing style to her excessive reading. Nancy, a lover of animals, particularly cats, dogs and rabbits, has two cats of her own, and also states that she “lives only for them” and that they are the most important beings in her household. Her hobbies when she’s not writing include visiting museums, experiencing movies and plays, as well as spending time with her loved ones. her current place of residence is colorado springs, colorado.

although he started writing at a very young age, it was only after working various minimum wage jobs in the united states that he began to take it seriously enough to consider it a livelihood. this only happened when she was in her mid-thirties. Drawing inspiration from all forms of living and non-living things around her, Nancy Atherton says that even the most random and minor moment could spark an idea in her mind and drag it along until it becomes an elaborate story. she relies primarily on her own life experiences, as well as the stories of those around her, to create the settings for her books, especially as it pertains to her characters. in her words, the biggest challenge of being an author is “keeping up with everything else in life.” she also describes her writing schedule as erratic and unhealthy because it implies that she follows the sleeping process in reverse order, i.e. she writes at night and sleeps after the sun rises. the reason behind this, in her words, is the “lack of distraction” after dark, where everything seems calmer and more peaceful. She said in numerous interviews about her that he wanted her books to appear on television, especially on BBC. Her advice to other writers of hers is to let her creative freedom rise as high as possible and not let anyone try to suppress her. Some of her favorite authors include Terry Pratchett, P.D. James, Dorothy Sayers, and Georgette Hayers.
the ‘aunt dimity’ series:
Nancy Atherton’s first novel in the Aunt Dimity series, published in 1992 and titled ‘The Death of Aunt Dimity,’ was listed as one of the 100 Greatest Mysteries of the Century by the Independent Booksellers Association of mystery. although it was not initially intended to extend to a full set of books, the plan came about due to the very positive ratings the first book of hers received. throughout her series, she uses ‘england’ as her preferred setting, even though she never actually lived there for long periods of time. she stated that her usual time to write one of the books in this series is from two hundred days to a full year.

The theme of this novel revolves around the protagonist, Lori Shepherd, who grows up hearing about ‘Aunt Diity’, a character from one of the bedtime stories her mother often told her. however, as an adult, she realizes that ‘aunt dimity’ is more than just a character and is actually a real person. The rest of it is about how Aunt Dimity’s death impacts Lori’s life, leading her to search for treasures she never even dreamed of. Nancy stated that she is associated with the character of Lori.
aunt dimity and the duke (book 2):
the second book that was published the following year was entitled “aunt dimity and the duke”. The plot has a new main character named ‘Emma Porter’ embarking on a mystery set around the Duke of Penford. The story was about uncovering the mystery behind the death of a rock star with the help of Aunt Dimity’s ghost.
Nancy’s books are often described as delightful blends of friendship, fantasy, and mystery. each of the books in her series also features recipes that are mostly from her family, especially her mother, and also from her friends. these too have gained fame and received praise for their authenticity. a special quality of the ‘aunt dimity series’ is that they can be read in any order. Nancy, however, suggests that they be read in the order in which they were published so that the reader can connect with the personal growth of each of the recurring characters.
