The first books in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series were written in 2007. They are Her Majesty’s Dragon and The Jade Throne. Her Majesty’s Dragon won the Compton Crook Award the same year it was released. In his first book, Naomi Novik tells the story of how the Daredevil and Captain William Lawrence met. He explains how Lawrence, while on an expedition with his crew, captured a French ship. Inside the container was an unhatched dragon egg that was about to hatch. To Captain William’s surprise, the egg hatches while they are still in transit. According to British, a dragon must have a handler by his side when he hatches to prevent him from going feral. It is for this reason that Captain William decides to seize the dragon, and they are united. Daredevil William’s loyalty is tested when the Air Corps tries to assign him to a new trainer. Temeraire maintains his loyalty to William by refusing to be recruited by a new trainer who serves as his security. the duo have to learn fast how to survive the war even as they are commissioned for their first battle together. His first mission is a success after stopping Bonaparte from hijacking the British Isles.
The second book in the series, Throne of Jade, was also published in the year 2007. It describes how the Chinese try to get back their long-lost dragon, which is reckless. According to Chinese tradition, a dragon like the daredevil had a loyal status and it was Captain William, who was just an ordinary man, he was not worthy of it. the Chinese make several unsuccessful attempts to recapture the daredevil from the British. A consensus is reached between the two countries on where the duo will be given royal transportation to China. During his journey, there are several attempts to eliminate William, but he manages to dodge all the attempts. It is also during this trip that Daredevil contracts a respiratory illness which is later cured while still on the ship. Arriving in China, Daredevil learns about his roots while William also tries to fit in by learning the Chinese language as well as making useful alliances. The series has yet to be produced into a movie with Peter Jackson, a Hollywood reporter who reportedly made inquiries about the rights to the series.
