Natasha Preston is a British author who has lived most of her life in the small towns and villages of the English countryside. growing up, many people loved to call her tash or tasha and her name stuck well into her adulthood. she writes young adult fiction, romance novels, and thrillers spread across several series, including “silence,” “the cellar,” and several stand-alone novels. She is married to Joseph, a man whose patience, help, and love, she says, is why she is the author she is today. she has two children from her marriage to joseph. Unlike many authors, Natasha did not grow up a reader of serial books, as she progressed through school and often earned average grades. after school, she found herself doing administrative and receptionist jobs that boggled her mind, as there was nothing else she was qualified for.

It was in 2010 when he accidentally stumbled upon writing. she was looking for an app on the app store when an amateur writing site called wattpad caught her eye. she had finally found something to do during his free time and for a few months she got lost reading stories by numerous little-known authors. during this time an idea to put some of his own stories that had been forming in his head. Natasha, who previously only read schoolbooks and famously has few if any mentors, was hooked once she started writing. She published “Hush”, the first novel of hers in the “Hush” series of novels in 2012 and has never looked back since. she credits wattpad for opening her eyes to what was possible by giving her an escape from her mundane life and then giving her the confidence to immerse herself in the world of authoring.

natasha preston debuted her writing career with “silence”, which later became a series with the same name. The protagonists of the series are Cole and Oakley, who tell the story from their own perspectives creating an interesting storytelling style. oakley is a brave, smart and strong girl who has been through some of her most traumatic events during her childhood. however, over the course of the series, she grows older as she battles her abuser and tries to find justice. Cole is a nice and funny person who loves Oakley and is afraid of losing her because she believes that she is her soul mate. Another minor character in the novels is Jasper, Oakley’s brother, who has a similar temperament to his boyfriend and is also very protective of Oakley. The young adult novel is set in the modern age and mentions various pop stars in the stories, such as Justin Bieber and One Direction. Starting in Australia, the novel eventually moves the setting to the UK for the Oakley abuser trials. The novels take on a formal and more often intimate feel as the story moves from court to Aunt Ali’s house, to Cole’s parents’ house, and to Cole’s apartment. the main theme of the novels is that tragedies and hard times are the lot of all human beings. They say that it is best to face them and be brave even when they leave you dry.

“Silence”, the first novel in the series, is a bittersweet tale of a girl doing her best to hide a secret that will change her life and whose exposure would likely tear her family apart. the traumatic event had robbed her and her family of something important: her voice. she never spoke a word since she was five years old, and now she is fifteen, which makes a decade of silence. She is friends with a boy named Cole who has always been by her side for the better part of the last decade. Cole understands her better, sometimes even better than she understands herself. Over the years, the two have become inseparable spending their days at each other’s houses and going to school together. Cole is currently seventeen years old and about to graduate from high school. she wants oakley to be involved in everything she does even though she is a junior. She can often be found skipping school, eating lunch, and going to Oakley friends’ parties where Oakley can never be found going alone. over time, their relationship grows from simply platonic to romantic. one of the best things about the novel “silence” is that it provides a dual perspective as the relationship between the two develops and blossoms into bride and groom.

“Broken Silence,” the second novel in the series, continues Oakley’s story as she finally gains the courage to face her traumatic experience. she had left england for australia four years ago and is back in england to testify about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. Cole had been angry when she left and now she has to face him again, even though he never stopped loving her. Oakley is quite old and is about to turn twenty. she is brave and bold and is trying her best to live a normal life again leaving the past behind. her acceptance to testify against her father is a horrible reliving of her experience as a child, which must have been very traumatic. she keeps her cool and fights the good fight to secure justice for her father. Jasper puts on a great show, expressing his caring and protective side to Oakley, making him the coolest brother ever. As for Cole, she stands out perhaps because she is now a more mature person at twenty-two. he is cute with his blue eyes, smart and protective of oakley and will do anything for her. he’s what any girl would call boyfriend material or, if they were a bit older, maybe even husband type. he is not shy about expressing her displeasure and protecting oakley from anyone who annoys or intimidates her, particularly during this very difficult period in her life. The novel is a heartfelt story of love, daring, and courage in the face of tragedy and life-changing events, packed with excellent storytelling from the first page to the last.
