Patricia Cornwell is an American crime novelist. she wrote thirty-seven books, including fiction, nonfiction, and a children’s book. she has sold over 100 million copies of her books. She has written many series, including Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s books about a Virginia medical examiner.
Other series include the Andy Brazil and Judy Hammer series, the Win Garano series, and an omnibus that references Scarpetta’s novels. Cornwell was born on June 9, 1956 in Miami. her father left the family when she was only five years old. Her mother was later hospitalized for depression in 1961. Cornwell went with her two brothers, Jim and John, to foster care and grew up in Montreal, North Carolina.

Cornwell battled depression as well as anorexia nervosa. She attended King College in Tennessee before graduating from Davidson College with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Patricia got a job as a police reporter in 1979 at the Charlotte Observer.
She married one of her English teachers, Charles L. Cornwell, in 1980. She also wrote a nonfiction biography of her friend Ruth Graham Bell. Charles became a preacher and they divorced her in 1989.
