There are not as many American writers as there are novelists with two names from two very different cultures. pearl s. Buck, however, is not like most people, she is also known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu. Born in June 1892, she was among the legends in the writing world being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938 for her many masterpieces. Though she died at the age of 80 in March 1973, her work here remains vibrant, thought provoking and inspiring to all who continue to read and watch the films made from her books. She was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, editor, author, and political activist who was never afraid to speak her mind and fight for what was right.
Born to two Southern Presbyterian missionaries, Caroline Stulting and Absalom Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia, they named her Comfort. a name that may be an irony of the eventful and sad life that she had or perhaps a perfect description of the words of her books for the people of the West. Shortly after her marriage, her parents moved to China. however, they returned to the states for pearl’s birth only to return when she was five months old. Because she was born in China, she chose to spend most of her life there, stating that although she was American by birth and documentation, the Chinese were the people she could easily relate to. the people who taught her to write and who believed in her so much that she began to believe in herself. According to her, she lived in two worlds: one strict, clean, small and white and the other not too clean, happy, big and very affectionate. According to her, these worlds were almost like water and oil, they could never mix. Although she was not part of her plan, she became a missionary for a while when she heard that her mother was seriously ill. however, she resigned because her views were seen as very controversial, especially during the controversy between fundamentalism and modernism.

Like most writers, her experiences and her life made her begin to write what she thought and how she wanted the world to be in a book. her books are some of the most famous and widely read in china, japan and india because she became the voice they didn’t have. she was committed to speaking out on issues that her generation ignored. she described most of her experiences and encounters in her books. She wrote on various topics such as women’s rights, the adoption processes that caused outrage here because mixed-race and Asian children could not be adopted, and immigration issues.

The books here are loved for their writing style which is systematic, vivid and simple. in your writing you allow the reader to understand exactly what is going through your mind. he describes his characters so vividly that you could draw the person he’s talking about without mistaking any features. it is in the same way that she captivates her readers by making them see what she sees. His readers are also captivated by the fact that his stories feel real. while he did write some fiction, it still wasn’t the kind of fiction that’s just for entertainment purposes. his are the kind of books most people can relate to. the kinds that help a person understand what other people in other parts of the world are going through. The reality in her books has won her many fans and audiences and helped bring comfort to Asian women whose children were rejected by American men who went to Asia as soldiers. she is among the readers who have worked her whole life to make the world a better place. Most of her books, including The Good Earth and Dragon Seeds, have been made into movies.
his book the good land follows the story of a farmer who marries a slave from the next town. in the beginning, he is very influential and rich with a large and beautiful farm that has a lot of harvest. however, he soon became another poor person in his town due to opium use, uncontrolled lending, and excessive spending. when his wife gives birth to her first child, a girl, she is mentally handicapped due to lack of proper nutrition as a result of the great famine in the land and her family’s poverty. she calls her poor fool because she feels sorry for her because she doesn’t deserve the life she leads.
However, his wife kills their second child at birth so that she doesn’t have to experience the harsh life they are experiencing and so that the rest of their family can have a better chance of surviving without the extra mouth to feed. . the farmer sells all his belongings and takes his family to the big city where they become borrowers. Although they are no longer hungry, they live in absolute poverty. one day he seizes the opportunity and corners a rich man whose house is being ransacked. to buy his safety, the man gives the farmer all his money. the farmer uses the money to get back on his feet and put his children through school. however, he steals pearls from his wife to buy a concubine. when his wife dies, he realizes that she had a very important role. at the end, she listens to her children talk about selling all her wealth and wasting her money.
