Peter Heller is an American bestselling author who started out as a magazine writer before making the leap to fiction. he has written for ‘men’s journal’, ‘outside magazine’ and ‘national geographic’. Heller, born in New York, where he was born and raised, is an adventurer whose stories and characters are inspired by his own experiences and those of the people he knows.

an alumnus of dartmouth college and the iowa writers workshop where he received his master’s in fiction and poetry, heller spent much of his time traveling as an expedition kayaker. His exploits took him to Peru, the Pamirs, and the Tien Shan Mountains, to name just a few.
Together with roy bailey, a kiwi paddler, he made a name for himself kayaking down the muk su river in tajikistan. located in the high pamirs, the muk su river, also known as the ‘everest of rivers’, had claimed the lives of five of the eleven people who had previously tried to conquer it. so heller’s achievement was pretty monumental.

As such, some of his fans were probably surprised when “The Dog Stars,” his first novel debuted in 2012. He’s not the kind of person you’d necessarily associate with writing fiction. But in truth, few activities are more exciting to Heller than the act of writing fiction.
magazine writing doesn’t compare because you always know what happens next. the pieces he contributes to publications like ‘national geographic’ are designed to chronicle his exploits. and because he lived those feats, the act of writing them does not excite the author.
Fiction writing gets your creativity flowing because it’s so unpredictable. heller remembers writing the first line of the first chapter the day he started creating ‘the dog stars’ and then, like the reader, was intrigued by what it meant, the potential it had, and what else would come next. p>
Instead of typing the next line, he stopped and listened, hoping the story would tell him what should happen. and once she did, she wrote the second line and then stopped to listen again.
this is how heller’s novels are written. he is fascinated by the music of language and the potential for greatness that each sentence holds. That is why it never occurs to the author to plan his novels. it would kill the magic of the creative process of it.
