These rental terms and conditions (the “Terms and Conditions”) set forth the policies, rules, and regulations that apply to your rental of textbooks and/or course-related materials (the “Rental Materials”) from barnes & noble.

These terms and conditions set out your rights and obligations and should be read carefully. in these terms and conditions, “you” or “your” means any person or entity that rents materials from us using this online rental service (the “service”). unless otherwise indicated, “barnes & noble”, the “company”, “we”, “our” or “us” shall collectively refer to barnes & Noble Booksellers, Inc. By using the service, you agree to these terms and conditions. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, you may not use the service.

The company may modify these terms and conditions from time to time and such modification will be effective once the company posts it on the website from which you accessed the service (the “website”). you agree to be bound by any changes to these terms and conditions when you use the website or the service after such changes are posted, as well as any other terms and conditions or privacy policies posted on such website. therefore, it is important that you review these terms and conditions regularly to ensure that you are aware of any changes. By accepting these terms and conditions, please note that you also agree to be bound by the general terms of use of the website.

rental terms and conditions

  • You must be 18 years or older to use the service.
  • When renting materials, you will be charged when your order is completed.
  • In order to rent materials, You must have one of the following forms of payment on file with us at all times: American Express, MasterCard, Discovery, Visa, Diners Club, JCB and Purchase Cards. prepaid debit cards and gift cards cannot be used to rent materials on the website unless a valid credit card is stored in your account profile. rented materials may include new or used textbooks and supplemental materials. the rental rate is the same for new and used rental materials.
  • we only rent books that can be reused; Workbooks, study guides, lab manuals, periodicals, and other consumables are not for rent. In addition, we do not guarantee that access codes/keys/cards, cds, dvds, workbooks, charts, or any other supplementary materials will come with books purchased or rented.
  • if a book you rent of barnes & noble arrives with a supplement, you can use it at no additional cost. at the end of the rental, all ancillary materials must be returned with the rented materials.
  • if you receive damaged rental materials, it is your responsibility to contact us within 21 days to report the problem, so please inspect any items completely upon receipt. once in your possession, damage or loss of the rented materials is your responsibility.
  • return the rented materials alone and not combined with a regular order so that your refund is not delayed.

Returns of rental materials are not accepted at barnes & lofty store. use the prepaid shipping label to return the rented materials. prepaid shipping labels can be printed by logging into your bn.com account and going to the “manage my rentals” section.

cancellation of rented materials

You may also return rental materials for any or no reason for a full refund less a $5 return fee per item during the 21-day early return period from order date. You will be charged replacement fees for books that are no longer available for rent. If the rented materials are lost or stolen, a replacement fee will apply.

During the rental period, all rented materials remain the exclusive property of barnes & noble. Your acceptance of the rented materials and payment of the rental prices entitles you to use the Barnes & noble for a limited time and binds you to these terms and conditions. At the end of the rental period, you opt out of the terms and conditions and lose all rights to the rented materials.

return of rented materials

rental materials must be returned using the prepaid shipping label at least 5 days prior to the rental return date designated by us at the time of rental (the “rental return date”) to avoid late fees or non-refund charges. prepaid shipping labels can be printed by logging into your bn.com account and going to the “manage my rentals” section.

all rented materials must be returned in salable condition. Resaleable condition will be determined by us in our sole discretion, but generally means that the book spine is intact, with no excessive damage to the cover or contents, all original pages intact, all original components present, and no excessive highlighting, writing or other brands. normal use highlighting and writing is allowed. any writing or highlighting that barnes & noble considers excessive or that hinders the legibility of the rented materials will be your responsibility and the replacement will be charged.

Follow all of our guidelines to ensure no fees are charged to your account. If the rented materials are not received by the rental return date, your rental will be extended by 15 days and you will be charged for such extension. If your rented materials have not been returned by the end of this 15-day extension, you will be charged a non-return fee, which is used to cover the cost of replacing the rented materials. this charge is equal to 100% of the list price of the rented materials less rental costs and the cost of the late payment fee. once you are charged the non-return fee, you are excluded from the terms of use and the rented materials become your property.

in the event that the credit card on file for you is no longer valid or in the event that the purchase limit on such credit card has been exceeded at the time non-return fees are charged, we will bill you for , and you agree to immediately pay the full non-return fee. we reserve the right to charge the payment method used during the initial rental or the most recent payment information you have in your online account for any extension or non-return fees, or the payment method we currently have on file for you that was updated by the applicable payment service provider, and you authorize us to continue to charge any extension or non-refund fees. If the payment attempt fails for any reason, we reserve the right to make multiple attempts to successfully charge your payment method for the amount due.

If you have not returned the rental materials by the rental return date and we are unable to charge your credit/debit card, it is your responsibility to pay the non-return fee immediately. You will be notified by email if your credit/debit card was declined and you will have 15 days to pay this fee before your account is transferred to a third party collection agency.

You agree that we, or a company acting on our behalf, may contact you by telephone, short message service (text messaging), or email at any phone number or email address associated with your account. , including cordless phone. numbers (i.e., cell phone numbers) that could result in charges to you, in order to maintain your account or collect any amounts you owe us, excluding contacts for telemarketing purposes as prescribed by law.

buy your rental

For information on how you purchase your rented materials, log in to your account and select “Rental Management: Manage Textbook Rentals”. the purchase price of the rented materials is the list price less any rental fees you have already paid. you can purchase your rented materials at any time during your rental period, up to the date of return of your rental. If you choose to purchase your rented materials at the end of your rental period, your purchase will be a final sale. You will not receive a refund if you attempt to return rental materials that you have previously purchased.

barnes & noble is not responsible for reminding you of the return date of the rent from her. each and every notification is a courtesy. you are responsible for meeting rental return dates.

Standard tax rates apply and vary by state.

Rental materials cannot be shipped outside of the continental United States.
