There are generally two types of board:
- white board (or white art board) is pressboard made of white fibers and a white laminate surface. it is more expensive than grayboard.
- grayboard is pressboard made of gray fibers and a white laminated surface.
How can you tell the difference? look at the edges of different board books. you will notice that some have white fibers in the middle of the board and some have gray fibers in the middle of the board.
The thickness of the board is measured in gsm (grams/square meter). we recommend a thickness of 300 to 400 g/m².
children’s board book covers
- “own cover”: uses the same board as the rest of the board book; cover and text pages are flush (same size)
- hardcover: A standard hardcover encloses the board text; the case is slightly larger than the text pages
safety of board books for children
To avoid sharp edges, we can produce the children’s board book with rounded edges at the top right and bottom right of the board book. Plus, we use a UV varnish lamination instead of a plastic lamination, which can peel off the board (and get into a child’s mouth). All of our overseas printing partners adhere to North American printing and binding safety standards for children’s books.
