Flipbooks have been enjoyed since the late 19th century, and flipbook animation is now recognized as one of the earliest forms of interactive media. Creating flip books remains popular with artists, and beautiful and inspiring designs continue to be made every day.

Artists can express themselves with their flip book animations, adding personality and expression not found in more formal pieces, similar to these prime examples of doodle art. In this article, we have chosen our favorite examples of flip books.

Watch this flipbook and feel like you’ve jumped right into playing a real Super Mario game. grumpy cloud is a hand-drawn animated book, full of wit and personality. 03. connect the dots

created by animation studio zumbakamera (opens in a new tab), dots & lines is a pair of flipbooks (launched by flipboku (opens in a new tab)), which invite you to connect the dots to create jumping characters and spinning geometric shapes. the dots (see above) present animations, while the lines show optical illusions. each book has multiple animations, depending on where you place your thumb to turn the pages. is a fun and interactive riff on the flipbook and serves as a great inspiration.

04. leonardo dicaprio gets his oscar

what better way to show off your pencil skills than by creating a flip book celebrating the greatest goals of the 2014 world cup. that’s exactly what stabilo has done here, and the result is a great combination of control of the ball and animation skills.

06. drill

You don’t need the best pencils or pens to create an amazing flipbook. here, scott blake (opens in a new tab) used a hole punch to create a fascinating animated pattern with greater depth. It may be short, but it’s worth rewatching as you try to figure out exactly how he did it.

07. hummingbird

artist juan fontanive (opens in a new tab) has improved on the original flipbook and created a series of flipbook machines. Combining sculpture and animation, this gorgeous bird-themed picture book will inspire any artist. hand-assembled by fontanive, the motorized machines let the illustrations speak for themselves, showing off the intricate details with every turn.

08. harmine cat

These light books were created by Japanese illustrator Harumin Asao and show a wide range of wacky and wacky characters come to life. we love his illustrative style and the way he incorporates it into his flipbooks.

09. spilling water

This mechanical animated book series is an original kinetic art project by Wendy Marvel and Mark Arnon Rosen. The photos used in the sequence were taken by Eadweard Muybridge, 1830-1904. you can see more of the series on the mechanical flipbook website (opens in a new tab).

We love this inspiring flip book by artist James Francis Bell (opens in a new tab), aka Displeasedeskimo. In just over three minutes long, hundreds of amazing biro drawings tell a short story of, well, just about everything. It’s not hard to see why this animation has had over 4.2 million views on youtube. just great.

11. lg viewty

We can’t even imagine how long it took the artist to create the detailed illustrations for these matrix-inspired flipbooks. The animations are part of a commercial created for the LG Viewty mobile phone. And the company clearly chose the right medium to advertise, as the ad was viewed over 16 million times on youtube.

12. submarine vs bayonet

another by artist ben zurawski, aka the flippist (opens in a new tab), was inspired by president obama’s talk about bayonets and submarines in a presidential debate with mitt romney. the result? a short but very sweet 30 second animation, showing the candidates playing a game of battleship. 13. clipped book

We were a bit stunned when we first saw this amazing flip book from paper engineer matt shilan (opens in a new tab). As the pages turn, so does the shape that appears on top of them, creating an amazing 3D effect. you will see this more than once. guaranteed.

14. let me drive

Flipbooks are clearly popular with music video directors, this time appearing on Canadian indie rock group Let Me Drive’s winter glove track. Using individual photos of the band in various poses and situations, the images were translated onto paper and assembled like flip books to create the band’s performance.
