Once upon a time, there was a princess named Snow White who lived in a castle with her father, the king, and her stepmother, the queen. her father had always told her daughter that she should be fair to everyone at court. he said: “people come here to the castle when they have a problem. they need the ruler to make a fair decision. nothing is more important than being fair.”

The queen, Snow White’s stepmother, knew how much this meant to her husband. At the first opportunity, she ran towards the magic mirror of hers. “mirror, mirror, on the wall,” said the queen. “Who is the fairest of them all?”

“Snow White is the most beautiful of them all!” said the magic mirror.

“what?!” the queen yelled. no one is fairer than me! the queen must have the best of everything, everyone knows that. what could be fairer?”

“Snow White is the most beautiful of them all!” repeated the magic mirror.

“what do you know? you’re a mirror!” the queen roared. And she left.

Still, the queen was upset. she was so upset she was that the queen decided to get rid of the girl once and for all.

“I can’t wait another day!” she stated. the queen called her servant, a hunter. “Find a reason to take Snow White deep into the woods,” she said, pointing a long finger at her servant. “then kill her.”

The hunter was surprised! but she was the queen and what could he do? the next day he took snow white to the forest. As he pulled the knife out of her to kill her, Snow White turned around.

“Look,” he said, pulling something out of his pocket. You have always been good to me. she held in front of him six perfect arrowheads that she had carefully fashioned. “you like them?” she said. “they are for you.”

“snow white”, said the hunter. “I can’t do this!”

“Of course you can have these,” Snow White said.

“That’s not what I meant,” said the servant. he fell to his knees. “How can I tell you this? the queen, your stepmother, ordered me to kill you,” he said. “but I can’t!”

“she did what?” Snow White yelled in alarm.

“you must run away!” said the hunter. far in the forest. now! and never go back to the castle!”

Snow White turned and ran into the forest as fast as he could. deeper and deeper she ran she. it was getting dark and the wolves were beginning to howl. she tripped and her skirt tore. the high branches of the trees seemed to reach down to grab her. she was scratched, bleeding and scared. however, she went on and on.

then suddenly, far away, there was a light. who lived so deep in the forest? she moved closer. it was a cabin! however, no sound came from the cabin, only light from the windows.

“Hello?” she said, knocking softly on the door. “hello?” unanswered. the door was slightly open. he opened it a little wider and entered. “Hello, is anyone home?”

He looked around. what a mess! she had never seen a more messy living room.

“This country house may be the biggest disaster I’ve ever seen in my life,” he thought. “But it’s a roof over my head for tonight. maybe if I clean up around here, I can earn my sleep.”

As she cleaned up, she thought of someone she already missed. Before her father remarried, she and a prince who lived in the neighboring kingdom were meeting. They took long walks in the royal garden, told each other stories and laughed.

After the queen moved into the castle, her stepmother had made a new rule: no more visitors. now the prince had to slip through the palace gate in secret. he was calling her from under the window and they could talk a bit that way. It wasn’t as good as the long walks, but it was the best they could do.

Now that he had to run away from home, would I ever see him again?

After Snow White cleaned up the living room, she went upstairs. on the second floor there were seven little beds lined up in a row, like for children. Tired of cleaning, Snow White yawned and lay down on the seven beds. she soon fell into a deep sleep.

Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were returning home after a long day at work in the jewel mines. when they opened the door, you can imagine their surprise when they saw their cabin completely clean!

“what kind of magic is this?” said one of the dwarfs, whose name was doc.

“I wouldn’t mind more magic like this!” another of the dwarfs said with a smile. his name was silly.

“We’d better check upstairs,” said another dwarf, whose name was grumpy. “There’s something fishy around here, that’s for sure.”

There, lying on all their beds, was a young woman, fast asleep.

“who are you?” all the dwarfs said at once.

Snow White woke up. the seven dwarfs realized that she was just as surprised as they were. soon everyone relaxed and shared their stories.

Snow White learned their names: Shy, Doctor, Silly, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy. she told them all about her stepmother. that her stepmother had tried to get the hunter to kill her, that the hunter had set her free in the woods, and that she would never be able to come home again.

“stay here, with us”, he said sheepishly.

“That’s sweet,” Snow White said. “But if I stayed here at your house, I would have to do something for all of you.”

“You already cleaned our place,” he said sneezing.

“Keeping the house clean will be easy,” Snow White said, “as long as we all pitch in. I’ll let everyone know what part they can play, and I’ll play my part too, of course.”

“That’s fair”, he said happily.

“But there must be something else I can do for you,” Snow White said.

The seven dwarfs shrugged.

“can you read?” said the doctor. “We have these books full of wonderful stories and we would love to be able to read them.” and so it was agreed that Snow White would teach them to read.

To celebrate their newfound friendship, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sang and danced the night away.

The next morning, before leaving for work, the seven dwarfs warned Snow White not to open the door for anyone. after all, who knows what harm her stepmother could do? the princess nodded and the dwarfs left the house. the princess prepared her first reading lesson. she also cooked a nice hot meal for the seven dwarfs when they came home that night. and so the days passed.

Back at the castle, the queen marched over to her mirror. “Mirror, mirror on the wall,” she demanded. “Who is the most beautiful of all?”

“Snow White is the most beautiful of them all!” said the magic mirror.

“snow white lives!” said the magic mirror. and a mirror image of Snow White living in the Seven Dwarfs’ Cabin was shown.

The queen turned red with rage. she yelled, “who does she think she is?! Snow White won’t get away with it!”

at the dwarf hut the next afternoon, when the seven dwarfs were working, there was a knock on the door.

“who is it?” Snow White said. she remembered the warning of the seven dwarfs not to open the door to anyone.

“She’s just a poor old lady,” said a shrill voice, “selling apples.” however, she was the evil queen, disguised as an old woman. “It’s raining out here, dear,” her voice said through the door. “please let me in.”

“Poor,” Snow White thought, “having to go door-to-door selling apples in the rain.” and so she opened the door.

“Take a look at this big red apple,” said the old lady, who, as you know, was actually the queen in disguise. she held the red apple close to snow white’s face. “Lovely, dear, isn’t it?”

“I would really like to buy your apple,” Snow White said. “But I don’t have any money.”

“That fine comb in your hair will be a good deal,” the old lady said.

“okay, that’s ok then!” Snow White said. she took the comb out of her hair and gave it to the old woman, who then gave her the apple. Snow White took a big bite. Alas, the fruit was poisoned! Immediately, Snow White fell to the ground in a deep sleep.

“yes!” the queen yelled, pumping the air with her fists.

At that moment, the door was flung open. on the seven dwarfs marched, home after the day’s work. really surprised they were to find snow white lying on the ground and what must be her stepmother next to her, laughing!

They chased that wicked queen out the door and into the storm. to the top of a mountain they pursued her. Suddenly, lightning struck the mountain! the queen fell and she was never seen again.

but there was nothing to help poor snow white. she lay absolutely still in her deep sleep. the seven dwarfs gently raised her in a glass coffin. day and night they watched over her.

one day, the prince passed by. ever since he found out that snow white was not in the castle, he was looking everywhere for her. he now he finally he had found her, but in such a state! the prince opened the glass coffin. his face seemed so fresh, even in that deep sleep.
